Negative Lane Lyrics
I haven't been myself all year
Too many changes around here
And the road to happiness has been a crash course
It's been a long year since you left
And a whole week since I last slept
Dusting myself off to ride the wild horse
Don't know where I'm going
Or just what it means
But the scars remind me of exactly where I've been
Chorus
If you try to find me
My number's not the same
I hang my hat up on negative lane
People keep asking how I've been
Because of the state of mind I'm in
There's a million places I swore I would be now
The radio songs all sound the same
I almost played into that whole game
But the boy's club hung a sign that said "no girls allowed"
Don't know where I'm going
Or just what it means
But the scars remind me of exactly where I've been
Chorus
You take the road of self-destruction
To the cut-de-sac of shame
Hang my hat up on negative lane
I keep on coming around
Got one foot back on the ground
And when the other joins me
I'll be splittin' town
Too many changes around here
And the road to happiness has been a crash course
And a whole week since I last slept
Dusting myself off to ride the wild horse
Or just what it means
But the scars remind me of exactly where I've been
If you try to find me
My number's not the same
I hang my hat up on negative lane
Because of the state of mind I'm in
There's a million places I swore I would be now
I almost played into that whole game
But the boy's club hung a sign that said "no girls allowed"
Or just what it means
But the scars remind me of exactly where I've been
You take the road of self-destruction
To the cut-de-sac of shame
Hang my hat up on negative lane
Got one foot back on the ground
And when the other joins me
I'll be splittin' town

This song is obviously about bowling. I think Kristen used to frequent the local bowling circuits of Strong Island back in the day. She must have bowled a 62 the night she wrote it, hence the self-loathing undertones. "And the road to happiness has been a crash course" is an analogy to the bowling where the pins "crash" at the end. If you spend enough time at a bowling alley, you'll realize their "radio songs all sound the same".
