All At Once Lyrics
Had a fight with my daughter
She flew off in a rage
Third time this week
Don't tell me it's the age
Don't know how I lost her
I only know that it's a shame
Ever since her Daddy left
The girl ain't been the same.
Chorus
All at once I hear your voice
And time just slips away
Nothing they can say could hold me here
Take me where I only feel
The wind across my face
Let me know there's someplace left for me
Waiting just for me.
Ah, who am I kiddin'
I should have known he'd never leave
The time we spend together
Is harder than the time between
You wouldn't think it could hurt so
To see 'em out the other day
If that's what he calls leavin'
I guess I threw it all away.
Chorus
They say women, we're the stronger
Somehow we always make it through
Hell, that ain't how I feel right now
I don't even think it's true
Looks to me there's lots more broken
Than anyone can really see
Why the angels turn their backs on some
Is just a mystery to me.
She flew off in a rage

Don't know how I lost her
I only know that it's a shame

Just a great song
I'm surprised there aren't more comments about the narrative within this incredibly emotion-evoking piece. At first, the story seems simple to grasp - her marriage or love has fallen apart, left, and cascaded onto her daughter too. But those suggestive, wonderfully chosen words in the chorus leaves me wondering.
@meoozik I think meoozik nails it. I wonder, though, is this a personal experience of Bonnie Raitt? Maybe that of a troubled friend? Ms. Raitt is still with us, so if it was her own ordeal, she was able to make it through a very grim struggle.

Beautiful song and desperately sad. There's no doubt that those we love the most - our children, our lovers - are also the ones that hurt us the most. Pleasure and pain. Love the bagpipes at the end. Classic song.
I believe this song is about an ugly one-sided divorce of a once beautiful marriage. The husband left the marriage and the family, but he didn’t physically leave the area. He is someone she still see’s day to day. She hears his voice, she sees his face, and then she remembers how things were; so good for so long. But he could care less anymore that she exists. She is not even a memory to him. I went thru this with my first wife of 19 years. She walked away, started a new life, and left me to do all the hard parts of raising our kids, including fixing the mess she made of them with her leaving. She shuffled her memories to where I never even existed. For me, it’s just as if she died. But she just moved to the next town over and I get to see her periodically and experience each time her pretending I’m not even there.

I believe, in meditation of her loss, she goes to alpha level, where we connect with God. She hears the voice of God and feels the Holy Spirit brush like a wind, across her face. She is then taken, by God, to a place of exquisite comfort and peace, for awhile, with God, intended only, for her and God. There exists, for each one of us, a place like this, with God, in this life, a foretaste of Eternity, to help us through, the dark night, of the soul. Amen.
