its pretty self explanitory, he loved her a long time ago, it didn't work out and she moved on. but after all this time he still loves and misses her. its so sad. i love this song.

You really feel the loss on this one because, at 20 years, you aren't only missing the relationship. You're missing the whole memory, the existence of person and place and time that are past and shall never be again.
