Germ Free Adolescents Lyrics
I know you're antiseptic, your deodorant smells nice
I'd like to get to know you, you're deep frozen like the ice
She's a germ free adolescent, cleanliness is her obsession
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away, scrub away, scrub away the S.R. way
You may get to touch her if your gloves are sterilized
Rinse your mouth with Listerine, blow disinfectant in her eyes
She's a germ free adolescent, cleanliness is her obsession
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away, scrub away, scrub away the S.R. way
Her phobia is infection, she needs one to survive
It's her built-in protection, without fear she'd give up and die
She's a germ free adolescent, cleanliness is her obsession
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away, scrub away, scrub away the S.R. way
She's a germ free adolescent, cleanliness is her obsession (4x)
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away, scrub away, scrub away the S.R. way
I'd like to get to know you, you're deep frozen like the ice
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away, scrub away, scrub away the S.R. way
Rinse your mouth with Listerine, blow disinfectant in her eyes
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away, scrub away, scrub away the S.R. way
It's her built-in protection, without fear she'd give up and die
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away, scrub away, scrub away the S.R. way
Cleans her teeth ten times a day
Scrub away, scrub away, scrub away the S.R. way

I have long felt that this was one of the most beautiful songs ever written. I have known people like this -- nominally terrified of disease, but really terrified of human contact. It's a method of control. There's a bit of ambiguity in the last line: does she need a phobia, or an infection to survive? My suspicion, and it is only a suspicion, is that s.r. must mean "state recommended."
actually, SR was a British toothpaste. but I think your interpretation was insightful.

@asstronaut The song is about incecurity that comes from feeling out of control. The creation of 'phobials' helps give the sufferer something to control, providing them with the illusion that they are in control when they are actually stil not in control, because none of us can control the environment we live in. This reflects Poly's own struggle with mental health issues throughout her life.

The line 'scrub away the SR way' is a direct reference to an advert for Gibbs SR toothpaste, that had the tagline, "Clean your teeth the SR way". Poly was a sharp commentator on modern life and it's no coincidence that an advert for Gibbs SR toothpaste was the first ever advert shown on broadcast TV, this was Poly subverting the media.
She was smart, funny and a true original, she will be greatly missed, the world is a poorer place without her.

Pertinent.
This song reminds me of the Buzzcocks, Why Can't I Touch It?... or vice-versa.
it's about a girl who is obsessed with being perfect.she's terrified of being filthy, therefore she spends hours on hygiene and "tidying herself up".Even the boy she likes she,she can only note he,s "antiseptic" She's turned being perfect into her entire identity to the point where she can't even allow herself to have any feelings that aren't "clean".Perhaps it's her way of fighting off the evident changes that happen during puberty,to stay "germ-free",thus turning it into an constant phobia.Great song, awesome vocals, this was one of the songs that got me into the more "melodic" sides of punk
@FeatherKing That whole obsession with being spotless always felt like a jab at how society pushes girls to be perfect. Poly’s voice just cuts right through all that fake stuff.
