This song is amazing lyrically i think... it plays with words like not many other songs do, although it's such a simple song in the end...
the beauty is in its simplicity. It's very clever.

I think the Buzzcocks are incredibly underrated. This song is terrific, one of their best.
it's my favorite by them.
I love the Buzzcocks' lyrics. They always make me smile. I think "when you kiss me does the lipstick on your lip stick on my face" is the best lyric ever.

Rated 0 On that point - does anybody know what the story is between this song and Shot by Both Sides. I know Howard Devoto was in Buzzcocks and then started Magazine.
Was this used with Devoto's blessing? / What it recorded as a pop at Devoto?

I have loved Shelley's lyrics. Very thoughtful and clever word structure. I interpret the line "When you kiss me, does your lipstick on your lips stick on my face" means if the lipstick sticks on your face means that it is a true relationship ... but if it doesn't it does not. I think the next line further confirms it when it goes "Will you miss me, In your dreams does your lover have my face". Thats my 2 cents worth.
I heard shot by both sides by magazine which uses the same riff first, and have to admit I preferred magazines song , buzzcocks have done many better songs, the A side promises was much better.

@sivilla My understanding is that Pete Shelley wrote the ascending guitar riff, then he and Devoto both used it in songs for their respective bands. He had a hand in writing "The Light Pours Out of Me" on the first Magazine album, too.
