"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.
She used to be the happiest girl I knew
I remember seeing her laugh
I remember the time she cried
When tears filled her eyes
As we sang 'Love Song' by Tesla
Her smile is turning upside down
She's got a boyfriend now
She's got a boyfriend now
And it's hard to see
What she's got herself into
She's getting used to
The loneliness that's bottled up
Inside she knows
She'll stick right through the sad times
And all the bad times
'cause it's up to her to make some sense somehow
She's got a boyfriend now
She always knew she'd find the right guy
To hold her through the night
Someone she'd take to meet her mom
And take her to see Brittany Spears
Who knows if Clark Kent is a Superman?
Or if he's just an asshole
Leading on and on
And on and on
And on
She's got a boyfriend now
And it's hard to see
What she's got herself into
She's getting used to
The loneliness that's bottled up
Inside she knows
She'll stick right through the sad times
And all the bad times
'cause it's up to her to make some sense somehow
She's got a boyfriend now
Why does it always seem to be
Guys like that always get to be the one
She thinks the world of
And why does it always seem to me
That girls like that can't ever find someone
Someone like me
And its hard to know the difference between inside and out
When she asks if I can mend her broken heart
I wouldn't know where to start.
She got what she always wanted
She got what she always wanted
And now
She's only crying on the inside
She's got a boyfriend now
And it's hard to see
What she's got herself into
She's getting used to
The loneliness that's bottled up
Inside she knows
She'll stick right through the sad times
And all the bad times
