You Went Away Lyrics
you went away
cos you said that you can't stand me
so I went away
I was sure that you can't stand me
well I don't think we have to be like this forever
is there more to life than love and being together?
you went away
cos you said you couldn't love me
and I went away
cos all I do is love you
well I don't think we have to be like this forever
there's more to life than love and being together
when my loud guitar comes in
when my thumpin' drums come through
when my loud guitar comes in
when my thumpin' drums come through
my loud guitar comes in
my thumpin' drums come through
well I don't think we have to be like this forever
there's more to life than love and being together
there's more to life than love and being together
is there more to life than love and being together?
I went away
cos you said that you can't stand me
so I went away
I was sure that you can't stand me
well I don't think we have to be like this forever
is there more to life than love and being together?
you went away
cos you said you couldn't love me
and I went away
cos all I do is love you
well I don't think we have to be like this forever
there's more to life than love and being together
when my loud guitar comes in

my loud guitar comes in
my thumpin' drums come through
well I don't think we have to be like this forever

there's more to life than love and being together
is there more to life than love and being together?
I went away

A constant back and forth in a relationship. One person is giving everything they have and the other doesn't seem to be reciprocating the same feelings. At the end it makes you wonder, if this is as good as it gets, but you realize that there's more out there than relationships.
I agree with GirlInformMe, this song really puts my feelings about previous relationships into music.
Two people in a relationship just realize that no matter how much they might want it to work out, they just aren't cut out for a romantic relationship with each other. One person just can't love the other as much as she might like.
@IWantWindToBlow I agree with this relation.

I've listened to this song a lot recently, but reading the lyrics with the song... It's like spending all day with a person, yet not knowing exactly who they are. "there's more to life than love and being together" like she's determined that she can move on from him/her. "is there more to life than love and being together?" like asking for reassurance that there is more in life for the two of them. "I went away" She moved on, but the way it's sung shows how begrudging the move away from him/her was, and how she could still fall back in love with him/her so easily if he confessed his/her love for her. I love this.
exactly.
exactly.
i think its like "you left me, it tore me up-for a little while, but since you left me, ill leave you. im over it, bye"
This song really made me see something that I didn't see before, I listen to this song now and it really speaks to me the person isn't ready, and sure you are upset, but you realize there is more.
Assuming that there is "more to life than love, and being together", as the song apparently concludes on that note, what is that?
The song seems to relate to a specific relationship, but to me it doesn't seem as if Tegan is asking for something more than just their love and proximity, but for the meaning of life. What is there to life if not finding the person you want to spend your life with? The song seems to use the relationship for its surface meaning, and that the break up gives rise to much deeper and older thoughts.
The song is beautifully written. The beginnings of the first and second verses are so simple, yet so striking. "you said you couldn't love me...all I do is love you". 'Aw shucks', anyone?
Also, why are there so few comments about this song?? I find the line "is there more to life than love and being together?" in my head every day. And I really wish that Tegan answered the question within the song with examples. Because I can't seem to figure it out. I realize that there is plenty in this world to fill your life with, but what else is as profound, crucial and worthwhile as love? Everything else seems so futile and boring. Please help.
my little thought on this song is kind of like that from melodee. but I always thought that the lyric was saying "there's more to life than love and being together." which at first i thought was an empowered way of moving on past a fixated-not-working relationship... of any kind. To me it would mean just moving on, seeing the other things in life that you love, other than just that one person, like other people and things. It leaves off with a bit lacking resolution, so the way I'm left seeing it is this:...

To me it would mean just moving on, seeing the other things in life that you love, other than just that one person, like other people and things. It leaves off with a bit lacking resolution, so the way I'm left seeing it is this: you're in a relationship with someone, you love them but it's not working out, they leave and you just can't let them go because it was love and how could your heart be wrong? But after a while you've got to look around at the other things you love so that you can be a whole person and be open to love again. Maybe it will come back around with that person, but there is still more to life than just being with that one person. Don't know how much sense that makes, but yeah. Another interpretation!
