Rue The Day Lyrics
I know you won't be thinking of me now.
It's been years.
But I hope you'll change your mind, when we were introduced
We both laughed cause we'd been friends since long before
We met today, but I never thought of you one single day.
But yesterday, I remembered driving with no headlights, we would
Tip toe out, in the evening.
Never done such things before.
But I have never frowned once, thinking of you since.
I'd be lying if I said your name never came up, as
I'd be thinking of just how I'd like to cash my days in now.
And all I ever do is think of yesterday.
Man it's hard to stand up straight all of the time, we'd
Tip toe down to my basement.
Never done such things before.
I'd drive you home for goodness' sake.
I could barely stand up straight.
Oh there's a memory calling,
Calling way too loud and way too strong.
Twisting all the bad things into good.
I'm a lucky guy now,
But I'll never know until it's gone.
Yeah I'll never know it 'til it's gone.
It's been years.
But I hope you'll change your mind, when we were introduced
We both laughed cause we'd been friends since long before
We met today, but I never thought of you one single day.
Tip toe out, in the evening.
Never done such things before.
But I have never frowned once, thinking of you since.
I'd be thinking of just how I'd like to cash my days in now.
Man it's hard to stand up straight all of the time, we'd
Tip toe down to my basement.
Never done such things before.
I'd drive you home for goodness' sake.
I could barely stand up straight.
Calling way too loud and way too strong.
Twisting all the bad things into good.
I'm a lucky guy now,
But I'll never know until it's gone.
Yeah I'll never know it 'til it's gone.

Man that last paragraph hits you like a jack hammer.
In the last verse, isn't it "there's a memory calling"?
Anyway, a great song. Nice of you to post all of these.
a great one by a great band... isn't it "I'd be lying if I said your name never came up..."?
This is my favorite Walkmen song, and one I like a great deal overall (I'm not too fond of the band in general.) Shouldn't it be "But I have never frowned once thinking of you since"?
and I have never found once thinking of you since. the line is 'and i have never FROWNED once thinking of you since
All those corrections are.......well...correct. haha.
Anyway, to me, this song is about reminiscing about a past affair with a girl. I think this is kinda obvious so maybe thats why nobody had listed that yet? Anyway, like "opifex" stated, that last line hits you so f#cking hard! The Walkmen have a way of giving even the most universal of feelings and moments the time they deserve. Everyone has had this happen to them at one point in time and The Walkmen captured that feeling in a song better than anyone else could have, IMO. I love this band.
Bloody top-notch song! Great atmosphere! Love how the song changes during the "tip toe" part.
Yes, Walkmen, I miss her very much. Thank you for evoking her memory so strong, with such lyrics as: "you wont be thinking of me now"; "never frowned once thinking of you since"; "I'd be lying if I said your name never came up"; memories that twist "everything bad things into good"; "till its gone - Wow. I miss her very much.
the irony of this song never fails to get to me. some guy put it on a mix cd for me before i ever liked him. now it reminds me of him, and i know he's not thinking of me now.
ahah, sorry i hate when people put their stupid song related stories. but god, this songs works so well and i'd never know it if not for him.
To me he's just been introduced to someone he knew years ago and all of a sudden all these memories come back and now that he's thinking about it he can't stop thinking about it. It's so crazy when that happens. I think The Walkmen and Hamilton have turned this universal but also under-rated feeling into an amazing song.
Without any exaggeration, I can honestly say that this track contains what is (at the very least) ONE of my favorite lyrical couplets ever. Particularly considering Hamilton is generature known more for his seizure-like stage moves and signature vocal strain than his lyrics (which are often more of a mood-setting tool than a literal message)his perfect description of crippling nostalgia stands out all the more.
