Bell Bottomed Tear Lyrics
This is the dinner prepared
This is the dress that I made
This is the child I brought up
And this is the woman you laid
This is the woman you laid
This is the perfume I wore
This is the hotel we stayed
This is the way that I lay
And this is the woman you laid
This is the woman you laid
We promise ourselves this is no one-night stand
Let us draw all the curtains and strike up the band
And I'm thrilled by gentlest touch of your hand we pretend
There's a tear, there's a tear
Not through confusion through fear, through fear
This is the smile that I wore
This is the song that we played
This is the way that I lay
And this is the woman you laid, this is the woman you laid
Next morning our eyes filled with sleepy regret
A kiss and goodbye and a long cigarette
But the pillow I lay on is cold and it's wet
Can't pretend
It's a tear, it's a tear
Not through confusion, through fear, through fear
And knowing at least that love came so near
Just adds to the weight of this bell bottomed tear
Roll out the red carpets and unplug the phone
Root out the photos you've already shown
Cos this is one night you won't sleep alone
Just one night
There's a tear there's a tear
Not through confusion through fear, through fear
And knowing at least that love came so near
Just adds to the weight of this bell bottomed tear
There's a tear, there's a tear
Not through confusion, through fear
Not through confusion, through fear.
This is the dress that I made
This is the child I brought up
And this is the woman you laid
This is the woman you laid
This is the perfume I wore
This is the hotel we stayed
This is the way that I lay
And this is the woman you laid
This is the woman you laid
Let us draw all the curtains and strike up the band
And I'm thrilled by gentlest touch of your hand we pretend
Not through confusion through fear, through fear
This is the song that we played
This is the way that I lay
And this is the woman you laid, this is the woman you laid
A kiss and goodbye and a long cigarette
But the pillow I lay on is cold and it's wet
Can't pretend
Not through confusion, through fear, through fear
And knowing at least that love came so near
Just adds to the weight of this bell bottomed tear
Root out the photos you've already shown
Cos this is one night you won't sleep alone
Just one night
Not through confusion through fear, through fear
And knowing at least that love came so near
Just adds to the weight of this bell bottomed tear
Not through confusion, through fear
Not through confusion, through fear.

unfortuanatly i can relate to this song so much, i basically let guys use me cos im so scared of being alone n for the little while im with the guy im not alone and i can be in denial and convince myself that they love me even though deep down i know theyre just using me and im just left hurt. i think the meaning to the song is about a fear of loneliness and yearning for love. "And I'm thrilled by gentlest touch of your hand we pretend"
"Cos this is one night you won't sleep alone Just one night"
Yeah I agree, it sounds like a woman being self conscious and vulnerable deeply dissatisfied with her regular life and she is turning to fantasy so she can wear a plastic smile. Melancholy morning after feelings. Regreting that she had the fantasy and that she needs it. She is fantasizing that the one she was spending her evening with was nearly in love with her as she is with him.
I believe the lyrics tell the story of a couple who had a child together, but have since been apart for many years, during which the woman raised the child on her own (this is the child I brought up).\n\nThe couple have resumed contact with one another and decided to meet up... perhaps in hopes of rekindling a long-lost romance (this is the hotel we stayed). She\'s done all she could think to do in hopes of making it a magical evening (this is the dinner prepared, this is the dress that I made, this is the perfume I wore, this is the song that we played, roll out the red carpets and unplug the phone, root out the photos you\'ve already shown).\n\nBy morning they both realize it\'s not meant to be (next morning our eyes filled with sleepy regret, a kiss and goodbye and a long cigarette). And with the morning comes clarity... she\'s no longer confused about her feelings, but regretfully acknowledges she can\'t get back with this guy for fear that it wouldn\'t end well like the last time (it\'s a tear, not through confusion, through fear).\n\nShe\'s realized all too late that she allowed herself to get carried away with the fantasy that it could have turned into something more (but the pillow I lay on is cold and it\'s wet, can\'t pretend, and knowing at least that love came so near, just adds to the weight of this bell bottomed tear).\n\nIn hindsight, she recognizes they were both just looking for some companionship (we promise ourselves this is no one-night stand, and I\'m thrilled by gentlest touch of your hand we pretend, \'cause this is one night you won\'t sleep alone, just one night).
In the first verse: "this is the child I brought up, this is the woman you laid..." It sounds like she is taking the father of her child back to the scene of the one night stand.
