Prettiest Eyes Lyrics
Line One is the time
That you, you first stayed over at mine
And we drank our first bottle of wine
And we cried
Line Two we're away
And we both, we both had nowhere to stay
Well the bus-shelter's always OK
When you're young
Now you're older and I look at your face
Every wrinkle is so easy to place
And I only write them down just in case
That you die
Let's take a look at these crows feet, just look
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Sixty 25th of Decembers
Fifty-nine 4th of Julys
Not through the age or the failure, children
Not through the hate or despise
Take a good look at these crows feet
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Line Three I forget
But I think, I think it was our first ever bet
And the horse we backed was short of a leg
Never mind
Line Four in a park
And the things, the things that people do in the dark
I could hear the faintest beat of your heart
Then we did
Now you're older and I look at your face
Every wrinkle is so easy to place
And I only write them down just in case
You should die
Lets take a look at these crows feet, just look
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Sixty 25th of Decembers
Fifty-nine 4th of Julys
You can't have too many good times, children
You can't have too many lines
Take a good look at these crows feet
Sitting on the prettiest eyes
Well my eyes look like a map of the town
And my teeth are either yellow or they're brown
But you'll never hear the crack of a frown
When you are here
You'll never hear the crack
Of a frown
That you, you first stayed over at mine
And we drank our first bottle of wine
And we cried
And we both, we both had nowhere to stay
Well the bus-shelter's always OK
When you're young
Every wrinkle is so easy to place

A really sweet song about an old couple, who are still in love. Age my have taken their looks, but they have the memories of a life together, and clearly, no regrets.
how cute? he still loves her, every inch of her, even her wrinkles, because each line by her eyes shares a happy memory of the 2 of them that he will never 4get even tho he's old. luv it :)
Paul Heaton stops being a vicious bastard of a songwriter long enough to write a genuinely sweet love song.
@SoundogBabylon And then he returns to form on the very next track with "Worthless Lie". But he's so damn good at either...

Always loved this song.. its about true love between an elderly couple, looking back over their life together.
The word 'line' used in the song seems to me to be a pun.. it refers not only to the wrinkles on their faces, but to the experiences that they had together, where each one is written down as a 'line', perhaps in some biography or memoir.
"You'll never hear the crack of a frown when you are here" is very gnomic.. like so many of Heaton's lyrics. Does it mean they never smile anymore.. as if they're sad? Or does it mean they're so happy that the frown is absent.. now that they're old, satisfied and coming towards the end of their life? One thought I had was that maybe these closing lyrics refer to a time after death, when they have passed over to a happier place followig their journey through life together...

In the closing verse, he could be relating the lines on their faces to the memories again, effectively saying that although they're old and wrinkled and somewhat unattractive, their memories (written as 'lines') will never fade.. just like the 'lines' on their faces :)
