Coming In From The Cold Lyrics
Coming in from the cold
In this life, in this life, in this life
In this oh sweet life
We're coming in from the cold
We're coming in, coming in, coming in
Coming in from the cold
It's you, it's you, it's you i'm talking to
Well you, it's you, it's you
It's you i'm talking to now
Why do you look so sad and forsaken
When one door is closed
Don't you know another is open
Would you let the system
Make you kill your brotherman
No dread no
Would you make the system
Make you kill your brotherman
No dread no
Would you make the system
Get on top of your head again
No dread no
Well the biggest man you ever
Did see was just a baby
In this life, in this life
In this oh sweet life
We're coming in from the cold
We're coming in, coming in, coming in
We're coming in from the cold
It's life, it's life, it's life
Coming from the cold
We're coming in, coming in, coming in
Coming in from the cold
It's you, it's you, it's you i'm talking to
Well you, it's you, it's you
It's you i'm talking to now
Why do you look so sad and forsaken
Don't you know
When one door is closed
Don't you know many more is open
Would you let the system
No dread no

I belive this song was written when Bob know he had cancer and hadn't long to live. It's about the cycle of life and the progress that has to be made to realise a just world.
First let me say that anyone who has looked up the meaning of this song has grown to love this song. congratulations, one of the best and most least recognized songs Marley every wrote. I created an account just to comment on this song. I truly think that this song is about the weaknesses people have and that everyone ,even the strongest, are vulnerable. And, that people as a whole should be treated as if they are "coming in from the cold" i.e. looking for warmth. They look to you for protection, revitalization... even as strong as they seem or seemed. accept with open arms, those who deserve/require help. Anthonyh, i come back around to agree that, i also believe, Marley (respectfully) is looking at life, claiming that you need to be careful what you follow(government) and not let them control you. And that all of those big troubles, "Biggest man", really didn't mean shit.
I love how he sings the chorus. It's like nothing i've ever heard before
One of my favorite songs, I love the lyrics "Well, the biggest man you ever did see was once a baby". That line just makes me smile. it's a really optimistic song for me about the opportunities in this life, i liked how marleyman put it about treating people as if they are "coming in from the cold", and the way marley sings it is awesome too.
I think this song is about going to heaven.
His message is positive... Life is sweet, if you come in from the cold (system created depression). Why feel sad/forsaken, when one door is closed, another (option/opportunity) is open. Don't remain a "baby"... grow and become a "bigger (wo)man"... "come in from the cold". How do you do that? A different poet wrote... "the answer is blowin' in the wind." ... so learn to read the wind ;-)
A friend to me tell that one day, back when Bob was working at the Chrysler plant in Newark, Delaware, and living with his Mom in Wilmington, my friend says he was driving his VW beetle from college (also in Newark) to his cottage, in Arden, north of Wilmington. It was a cold winter day and my friend saw a young man hitchhiking along the road. My friend stopped to offer the fellow a ride. The pedestrian opened the door, destinations were exchanged, and the fellow got into the car, closing the door. As they drove off, the fellow said, "This car is pretty warm - for a Volkswagen. It's good, when one door opens, to come in from the cold to a warm place."
I still feel it is the saddest song bob sung
Thats deep! I feel you on that one.
Thats deep! I feel you on that one.
