Hey You Lyrics

Hey you, you say you wanna change the world
It's alright, with me there's no regret
It's my turn, the circle game has brought me here
And I won't let down 'till every song is set

You realize now
You should have tried now, oooh
The music's gone now
You lost it somehow
Hey you, sha lalala
Hey you, sha lalala
Wooo, sha la la
Wooo, sha la la

Hey you, you say the race is much too fast
It's okay, with me I'm keeping pace
It's my game, the music is inside my head
For every one on top there's one who can't retrace

You realize now
You should have tried now, oooh ooh
The music's gone now, you'll find out
You lost it somehow
Hey you, sha lalala
Hey you, sha lalala
Wooo, sha la la la
Wooo, sha la la la

You realize now oooh
You could have died now, oooh
The music's gone now
You lost it somehow
Hey you, hey you, sha lalala
Hey you, sha lalala
Wooo, sha la la
Wooo, sha la la

Sha lalala, hey you, hey you, hey you
Sha lalala, ba-ba-ba-baby's stupid (?)
Sha lalala, no time, no time left, no time
Sha lalala, don't let me down, don't let me down
(music and singing fades out)

This song was written by Randy when he wasnt too happy with Burton Cummings. BTO and the Guess Who were competing bands on the airwaves at the time. It was the differences in the outlook they had on life when they were in the Guess Who together.

@hamishh Your right-on ! I watched a Youtube video with Burton & Randy on stage together and Burton stated the same thing before they played this song together.

@hamishh Thanks! That makes sense. I’m a 56 yr old 80’s dude enjoying what my narrow mind missed and playing some. Gotta’ love the feel of the tune, but I thought “Damn! Dude’s giving me shit for setting my guitar down 30 years ago and being a dad!” I feel better now!

The song is Randy's response to Burton Cumming's jabs at Randy after the latter left the Guess Who. Randy once said of the song "I deserved to gloat a little after all the mud Burton slung at me".

I love BTO but never knew what this song meant...any help?...

@victoryfields - you may already know but Randy left The Guess Who because they were at an impasse. Burton Cummings didnt think Randy was cool because he didnt do drugs and Randy had gall bladder issues he had to have surgery for to get resolved. During his recovery from surgery he started thinking maybe he should leave the band but Burton Cummings fired him before he could quit. The verse "you could've died now" is pretty much Randy telling Burton he could have died from taking drugs. But the whole song is pretty much a reference the where Burton Cummings...

Oh, BTW, I don't think it's "ba-ba-ba-baby's stupid" at the end, but "baby, it's too late". That's just what it sounds like to me, and I've been listening to this song since I was 5.

You are right-but it does sound like stupid too

I think this is about a failed relationship, and it's all the woman's fault. "You should have tried now, the music's died now, you lost it somehow, etc.
