The City Has Sex Lyrics
The city has sex with itself, I suppose
As the concrete collides while the scenery grows
And the lonely once bandaged lay fully exposed
Having undressed their wounds for each other
And there's a boy in a basement with a four track machine
He’s been strumming and screaming all night, down there
The tape hiss will cover the words that he sings
But then they say it’s better to bury your sadness
In a graveyard or garden that waits for the spring
To awake from it's sleep and burst into green
Well I cried and you'd think I'd be better for it
But the sadness just sleeps and it stays in my spine
For the rest of my life
And I learned and you’d think I’d be something more now
But it just goes to show it is not what you know
It's what you were thinking at the time.
This feeling’s familiar, I’ve been here before
In a kitchen this quiet I waited for a sign or just something
That might reassure me of anything close
To meaning or motion with a reason to move
I needed something I want to be close to
And I scream, but I still don’t know why I do it
Because the sound never stays, it just swells and decays
So what is the point?
Why try to fight what is now so certain?
The truth is all that I am is a passing event that will be forgotten.

but the sadness just sleeps and it stays in your spine for the rest of your life
"but the sadness just sleeps and it stays in your spine for the rest of your life" This line reminds me of an STD. Herpes, actually. I'm not trying to be funny or an ass or anything, and I'm not saying that's what the song is about, but it does make me think of that. When the Herpes virus is domant, or "asleep", it pretty much just sits in a bundle of nerves at/near the base of the spine of the infected. And of course, it's there for the rest of your life.
I'll get the firing squad ready for you.
"And there is a boy in a basement with a four track machine He's been strumming and screaming all night, down there The tape hiss will cover the words that he sings"
Gotta be autobiographical. I'm fairly certain Conor recorded A Collection in his basement on a four-track machine, and of course in many of the songs his lyrics are hard to make out over the hissing of the tape.
i need something i want to be close to and i scream, but i still don’t know why i do it because the sound never stays it just swells and decays so what is the point? why try to fight what is now so certain? the truth is all that i am is a passing event that will be forgotten.
thats my favorite part..
this song rules, bright is cooler than anyone
people are stupid. comment on this great song, haha.
i've known this song for probably 2 years now, and i think this is the first time i've looked at the lyrics.
i'll never get over how good Connor is.
ps. the line "having exposed their wounds for each other" should actually be, "having UNDRESSED their wounds. . ."
and the line, "the sadness just sleeps and it stays in your spine for the rest of your life" should be, "it stays in MY spine. . ."
This is an awesome song
