If I am silent then I am not real
But if I speak up then no one will hear
If I wear a mask there's somewhere to hide
Silence is Golden
I have been broken
Safe in my own skin
So nobody wins
If I raise my voice will someone get hurt
And if I can't feel then I won't get touched
If no truths are spoken then no lies can hide
Silence is Golden
Nobody gets in
Safe in my own skin
So nobody wins
Did you hear me speak
Do you understand
Did you hear my voice
Will you hold my hand
Do you understand me
Won't someone listen
Nobody gets in
My body's a temple
But nothing is simple
Silence is golden
I have been broken
Something was stolen
Safe in my own skin
But if I speak up then no one will hear
If I wear a mask there's somewhere to hide
Silence is Golden
I have been broken
Safe in my own skin
So nobody wins
If I raise my voice will someone get hurt
And if I can't feel then I won't get touched
If no truths are spoken then no lies can hide
Silence is Golden
Nobody gets in
Safe in my own skin
So nobody wins
Did you hear me speak
Do you understand
Did you hear my voice
Will you hold my hand
Do you understand me
Won't someone listen
Nobody gets in
My body's a temple
But nothing is simple
Silence is golden
I have been broken
Something was stolen
Safe in my own skin

uh to me this is about hiding socially, sorry shirley .. its about some kind of coward, letting no one in. introvert to the extreme.
That's an extremely ignorant and narrow viewpoint. Withdrawal and defensiveness of the type expressed in these lyrics is always the product of emotional trauma, which itself is usually born out of some form of abuse, typically in developmental phases (read: childhood and adolescence). You would not want to let anybody in either if your experience had taught you that all they would want to do is hurt you, but you still wouldn't want to be alone. If you took the risk -- and you would sometimes -- you'd have a very difficult time opening up no matter how much you wanted to, and if the person you'd let in hurt you (as people tend to do no matter how good their intentions are), it would be that much more painful and only serve to convince you further that you're better off letting nobody in. Basically, barring some long and drawn out miracle, you'd be emotionally fucked no matter what you did.
