In my mind you can't look at any one piece of this album without considering the whole. There are alot of theories on hidden occult intents. I personally think this record is a ground up ritual for evoking a higher for of self or invoking a "godform" if you will. The record builds in intensity until it eaves out for Laterals. I don't know about you, but I feel like I have had my soul scoured by this point in the record. Now it is time to take a breath and take stock of what has changed in you. And a time to brush off concerns and those nagging things in the back of your mind. Lets not focus on the past but instead, lets get lost in the beauty of the rainstorm after the hurricane. Lets brush asid those things that are less than optimistic and brazenly become mesmerized by the simple things.
well if you look up the word disposition it means A person's inherent qualities of mind and character. SO with that being said. I personally think the song is about a relationship or friendship with someone.
He just wants to regain that relationship, but he knows he can't say anything to her or him to change how she now feels so he must watch the weather change. In other words watch him or her go on with their life.
How did you ever read so much into so few words. I think this song is open to just about ANY interpretation. It could be so simple as two people not speaking and one believing that things will be better once the other person opens the door with communication.

@ HairypalmJoe well I listen to the song and let my mind drift to what the song means to me.

I feel like in this song, he's trying to say step back, and look at the big picture, how beautiful it is, and watch how it can change
I think Disposition is about how your feelings change through life. Throughout most of the song, the tune is mellow, I think that means life is going good, so you feel happy and chilled, and take everything in. Towards the end of the song, however, the tune starts to get slower and darker until it fades, I think that is when something happens in your life to make you feel sad, so instead of taking everything, you reflect on what has happened, which leads into Reflection.
how come in the other albums it was some what more angry and aahh im gonna kil this and that. And now its like look at what is around ou isnt it all buetiful.. there definetly more spiritual now and more mental and open your mind....
watch the weather change. mention this to me. i.e. even a banal talk about the weather is preferable to the silence between two people, as the weather changes around them (life goes on).
mention anything. just start ANY form of communication. this song to me is more about conveying a mood, that of two people cut off from each other as their lives and the world continues.
ties in with the theme of communication on Schism - 'cold silence has a tendency to atrophy any sense of compassion'.
This song always in a way reminded me of Disgustipated and how it repeats, "This is necessary. Life feeds on life feeds on life feeds on life..." And how it fits in with Disposition is that they both kind of have a simple message.
Moving along to my interpretation of the song: "Watch the weather change." When I hear that I always think of things like global warming, how rainforests turn into deserts, etc. What Maynard is saying basicly is that we all just sit back and watch our environment melt away into a shit hole, meanwhile many of us drive around big SUV's and generate large amounts of garbage which just add to this problem.
Everybody sits around while the climate changes but doesn't do a damn thing about it.
This song reminds me of meditation, of observing one's thoughts. Thoughts drift and dissipate like clouds, and you'll find this to be true if you watch closely enough. Personally, the music seems neutral-- void of actual emotion, much the way one tries to be when meditating. I never really understood this song until I started to meditate. This song alludes to the fact that thoughts influence emotion, influence your consciousness. From one second to the next, nothing about your thoughts is exactly the same. It is in a constant state of flux, evolution or devolution.
I think it's just about time and how we feel it, flowing away when we don't even have time to decide our ways, our aims, our goals, feeling we are useless and doing nothing for our future. So we ask time to mean something, anything, changin our hobbies, our passions and sometimes our dreams just to achieve something better, something that can meang a fucking thing to us. And than seasons are passing by...
I feel like, personally at least, the lyrical intention is a mixture of a lot of what I've read here which ,given the arrangement instrumentally, may form the intended meaning in the piece in of itself.
Considering the album as a whole, and that Disposition runs rather smoothly into Reflection, the most logical step in interpreting the lack of lyrics in the former as juxtaposed to the latter would be that, as in life, personal opinion (or environmental disposition) is considered to come as more of a feeling or inherent gut reaction based entirely on the natural inclination of a person's psyche.
These are aspects of everyday life that appear to unify in their apparent fundamental hold over self-aware life. Essentially, these are aspects of the fundamentals of what we experience in life that provides analytical thought with direction. Emotion giving purpose and allowing for intellectual and introspective growth; The spiritual journey if you will.
Given this, we can assume that regardless of what is generally accepted to be considered as reality, reality (and obviously the seemingly random succession of events as experienced over time that we justify as our reality) is purely subjective based on our personal proportionate emotional reaction to external events and relationships; Our disposition.
This inherent disposition is felt in it's entirety, and feelings are non-quantifiable re-interpretations of events conceived irrelevant of passage of time, but altered massively over time due to culminated external events that we in turn quantify and interpret based on our inherent disposition. Cyclical in nature, as balance would suggest and as introspection should be by nature.
Considering the tracks once again, in succession (because that is the way we experience events over time) I feel Disposition to focus primarily on any undisclosed, fundamentally moving experience in a person's lifetime, quantifiable only in terms understood emotionally by the individual's disposition to the event. This is mirrored in the entirely supplemental, cryptic and sparing lyrics used to push the FEELING of the track above all else. In literal reference to the lyrical content, it seams as though any possible event or interpersonal communicative action is given the ability to alter all perceived reality due to the individual's disposition at the time of experience.
After that, we make sense of these changes by 'reflecting' on the event and on our own disposition, hence providing the intellectual guidance in introspection through personal emotional disposition, further altering our perception of all reality; So think, and watch the weather change.
