This song has always been a favourite of mine. I've always seen it as simply an effort to make things in the world, or just in ones own life, better. An effort so weak, as the one person is just a number, and doesn't seem to be enough to make a strong change.
"So the story's told beyond our grasp We were climbing on forever, an infinite task Shoulders straining with the endless toil We're nothing more than a feather moving in the wind" This is about constant struggle, when whatever one is trying to accomplish is seemingly out of reach, maybe even impossible to obtain.
"Oh, and all these seeds will grow anyway Even though the outcome we cannot say" This means things will go as they will, we cannot fully control results.
And ofcourse theres other obvious lines in the song which hold my theory(or opinion) up.
All in all, a beautiful song. Possibly Sunny Day's best.
How much ass does this song kick!!? i love Sunny Day. All their songs are great and remind me of old times. They remind me on all my old friends that moved away. Such a good band.
how perfectly descriptive is this song of someone completely devotedly in love... but its that dysfunctional kind of love, not exactly a perfect relationship thing. And thats where the emotion comes from...flawlessly amazing
Jeremy said he wrote this song when someone from the past came back into his life just when he needed it, so i'm assuming that's what it's about.
I love the "dysfunctional love" meaning UltimateCHill brought to this song. The love is there but it's off and on and not committed... Yet the feeling is just as strong. This is my favorite SDRE song... It's beautiful, awkward and bittersweet at the same time.
My personal favorite part of this song has to be the organ, because it's somewhat unexpected for SDRE...I have a huge playlist of mp3's so sometimes I zone out while involved in something else, and I remember the organ part of "Every Shining Time.." catching my attention. One of my favorite songs, and I love the chorus..

This song is so fuckin depressing to me but still I love it. I know Jeremy 'found God' or whatever but I always think of this song as a treatise on nihilism though he changes his mind in the end. I don't see how this song could be about a girl or a relationship when the bulk of it focuses on how we have no control over life, it is meaningless and there is nothing. I guess there is the third verse and the bridge which seem to address a person and are optimistic. I think the "every time you smile/ Every shining time you arrive" part shows he's found meaning & God. bleh . . . i guess i'm talking out of my ass anyway.
