Even Lyrics

Come down to the edge of the room
You can see them all crowdin' around
Soon they'll come in and come up here

Let them find an effigy
But they'll never find me
Head man I live to see you roll away

They'll never ever ever find me
They'll never ever ever find me

Headman, walking, right in front of me
Don't you, look in, I'm not here you see
Deadman told me where I am to hide
Said he's waitin' there, where it's all

Even...
You can feel them coming
Up through your heels

Outside misconstrued, the search continues
The hidden afraid are never betrayed
by the already found and taken away

Born in a different place
The hands that hold your face
Are only trying only tryin' to keep you warm

They'll never ever ever find me
They'll never ever ever find me

Headman, walking, right in front of me
Don't you, look in, I'm not here you see
Deadman told me where I am to hide
Said he's waitin' there, where its all

Even...

Walk on, will we, walk on
With our heads to the wall
Let them find that they'll never find us all
Hey I wanted a life less hidden
Hey, wanted a life, but I'll never give them

Part of me...
Part of me...

I will save my right
So hard to the ground
'Til we all lay down
'Til we lay ourselves down

this is a great song...something to do with war is all i can see... if anyone has a shot in the dark as to anything else you can get out of it...go for it.

See i know this is so wrong, but hey what the hell its worth a shot....its kinda like they don't want to follow everyone else...being the headman and the people all watching...they want to be on their own and stay back and do their own thing, like the deadman. yeah its wrong oh well

I somewhat agree with justpeachy, but I think the title of the song has more to do with the explanation. "Even" I guess is a lot more equal, than something like Capitalism, I think the narrator of the song wants to hide from the competitiveness and inherent inequality found in capitalist America, the deadman he talks to probably is probably referring to a heaven of some sort, hiding from the headman who represents the reality that is our society.

Here's my take on it...The background commentary made by the elderly man during the interlude makes it clear that the song is about World War 2. Considering the anti-war message found in The General, I think it is safe to say that this song is also anti-war. I think it is about a soldier who would rather hide is safety than fight in the war. ("Deadman told me where I am to hide") The place "where it's all even" is probably heaven, since the "deadman" is waiting there. That's my take on it. What do you think?

this song his about chad's grandfather's place in war. then were really close and when they were recording it he got a call from someone saying that his grandfather had passed away. apparently that's why they don't play it often in concert. you could say that it's sacred. i love this song.

Snoyarc, do you know if that is Chad's grandfather talking in the background?

first off, this song friggin rules. with the war theme in mind, I want to comment on the one line "outside, misconstrued, the search continues, the hidden afraid are never betrayed by the already found and taken away" he is hiding from the enemy somewhere, or even from his own army, afraid to fight. the locations of the rest of those hiding are not given away by those who have been found, either because of an oath of silence or they are dead.

Spatcher3, I think you're right on!
