Suburban Me Lyrics
The self-inflicted state of mind
A one-man struggle beneath the tower
I think the clock still exist
god just forgot to tap my shoulder
I woke up today
I wish I felt something
The odour of my apathy
just might be true
I want to be the things I see
The pilgrim that is me
But I know I ain't that free
The suburban me
Spirits rise and miss the eye
Covered by the stench of judgement
As gods reflection test my pride
I serve the failure that's haunting me
Twisted visions torturing
Who claims to be the one?
That filtered smile
just might be true
"On half speed, tonight I suffer
Satisfaction brings the unheeded"
Can you hear the message,
as I wrestle with the clouds?
I'm on the way to succumb,
It just might be true
A one-man struggle beneath the tower
I think the clock still exist
god just forgot to tap my shoulder
I wish I felt something
The odour of my apathy
just might be true
The pilgrim that is me
But I know I ain't that free
The suburban me
Covered by the stench of judgement
As gods reflection test my pride
I serve the failure that's haunting me
Who claims to be the one?
That filtered smile
just might be true
Satisfaction brings the unheeded"
as I wrestle with the clouds?
I'm on the way to succumb,
It just might be true

Wow, first just have to say that In Flames has become a diety. Anders amazing use of words and the music... simply amazing. Anyways, I think this song is about the confusion of religion. "The self-inflicted state of mind" is his confusion on what to choose and what "god" to worship. "I think the clock still exists, god just forgot to tap my shoulder" seems like he knows that time is running out, that he will die one day, it's just that god forgot to "tap his shoulder" and remind him and prove that "he" exists. "I woke up today, I wish I felt something" He's saying that he wishs he could believe in a god and that he felt something deeper inside than just the surface.
"I want to be the things I see The pilgrim that is me But I know I ain't that free The suburban me" Ok, the chorus... it's like he sees everyone everywhere worshiping some god and he wishes he could be a part of it, that he felt the way they do, that he's a pilgim on the journey of life, but he knows he can't just believe in god the way they do, that he can't just have some blind faith and follow a god he doesn't know exists, he's too "surburban" so to speak.
"spirits rise and meet the eye Covered by the stinch of judgement" I think that's kind of a fear, that people die and if there is an afterlife, there's judgement awaiting, and who knows what the right path is.
"Twisted visions torturing Who claims to be the one? That filtered smile just might be true" This is good, this is more on the topic of religion, about all these people who claim that their god is the only true god, and they preach to you and give you "undeniable" proof, but he's saying that maybe someones "filtered" smile might be true, that they may be telling the truth about their god.
"Can you hear the message, as I wrestle with the clouds? I'm on the way to succumb, That's just saying that he's wrestling with the decision of choosing a god to worship, to try to make a choice to follow a religion, but he's wrestling with finding the right one, however, he's "on the way to succumb."
I don't think In Flames is a "religious" band, per say, but they always seem to sing about the deepest subjects inside of all of us, and religion and the questions about it, are one of the deepest I think. Anders should worship himself, he's a god in my eyes!
@me_tall_i_ca thank you very much for your explanation. I am a big fan of In Flames and love all the albums between 1994 and 2000. It is funny that i have discovered your text after 11 years :)) thank you again!!

I Think this song is a story of someone who tries to be more than who they are, but is wrapped up in thier own state of mind. But anyway, The guitars in this song are amazing, it's like the whole song is a big solo, this song was my favorite untill I Heard "The Inborn Lifeless" This song is on Inflames.com And The guitar work is extrordinary. In Flames is the Shiznak!
wow i cant believe only one person has commented on this song it fuckin rocks
lol i think its about someone who cant achiev his objectives of being the person he wants... and he feels sick of it: "I woke up today I wish I felt something The odour of my apathy just might be true "
it just might be true :)
This song is about someone growing up in a place that isnt growing at all.. he feels like he's trapped as he watches what life could be like... but the last lines dont fit into my theory.. Which puts me at a loss.. Im going to put my thumb in my ass and hope someone comes up with a better solution :D
i think anders is shakespear reincarnated
i think its about a guy who is just sick of the way everything is going..and he wants to be so much mroe byut doesnt have the opportunity or chance..or maybe is just lazy
This is almost addresses a messiah complex that most well-meaning people can have in their life, thinking 'I CAN change the world on my own', then living in frustration at being unable to achieve this goal or even live up to their ideals. It's also about wanting to be truly free as you believe you should be (the pilgrim that is me) but finally acknowledging that the 'suburban me' is the only you that you will ever be allowed to be.
the part that speaks to me is the chorus...i think...or thought that it was about things you want but cant have for some reason...like what anders said about scorn in the tokyo livel; although now i think the religeous idea of it seems to make more sense...
the best part of this song, however, is not the lyrics, it's where the guitarists play without the drums in the background for like a bar or two...it sounds...AMAZING
Great interpreatation me_tall_ica, I never though this song that way before. However, I generally believe that IF do not write about so clearly defined things as religion or relationships or whatever. I think this is about (growing up/living in) an isolated environment, like a suburb, where nothing really happens. He dreams of grandeur and fame, but they way life is going right now, he isn't goin anywhere. (come to think of it, many IF songs are about this).
