You Could Make A Killing Lyrics
(one two three once again go)
There is nothing that competes with habit
And I know it's neither deep nor tragic
It's simply that you have to have it
So you can make a killing
Oh you can make a killing
Oh you can make a killing
I wish I was both young and stupid
Then I too could have the fun that you did
Till it was time to pony up what you bid
So you could make a killing
Oh you could make a killing
Oh you could make a killing
I could follow you and search the rubble
Or stay right here and save myself some trouble
Or try to keep myself from seeing double
Or I could make a killing
Or I could make a killing
Oh I could make a killing
Yeah I could make a killing
I could make a killing
And I know it's neither deep nor tragic
It's simply that you have to have it
Oh you can make a killing
Oh you can make a killing
Then I too could have the fun that you did
Till it was time to pony up what you bid
Oh you could make a killing
Oh you could make a killing
Or stay right here and save myself some trouble
Or try to keep myself from seeing double
Or I could make a killing
Oh I could make a killing
Yeah I could make a killing
I could make a killing

wiiiiild guess about the meaning. . .maybe this person she knows is kinda self-destructive with the things they do. .ex:lifestyle, relationships, partying, drugs, etc? i wonder if the person she is talking about is making a killing of themself or her? ahh heck. .i don't know
I love this song!! it fits so well with this guy.. for me, this is what it means.. shes talking about this guy, and its like she needs him, even though it has nothing to do with him and hes not that good for her. she just cant NOT have him around
(There is nothing that competes with habit And I know it's neither deep nor tragic It's simply that you have to have it )
and she got really involved with her feelings, and now its time to pay for it, and maybe he's just having fun, and she wishes she could too without investing all she had
( wish I was both young and stupid Then I too could have the fun that you did Till it was time to pony up what you bid )
i think to make a killing refers to like, having it all. so he could make a killing off of her, and take all that she has because she has given it to him.
thats what it is for me anyways. i really love this song, and ll of the songs off cruel intentions are great
When I was a freshman in high school, I was really big on Aimee Mann and used this song on a project in English. We had to make a soundtrack for Othello, and I loved the song and wanted to put it in, so I just made up a bunch of bullshit in attempts to connect the song and the play. My english teacher ate it up because she was the worst, so it worked out.
Really great song.
I wouldn't be surprised if this song was about drug abuse. Firstly, the line 'there is nothing that competes with habit' - i.e. a drug habit. 'and I know it's neither deep nor tragic' - I've personally known a lot of people who have got into drugs, particularly cocaine and heroin, because it has been glamourised by the movies as being 'deep and tragic'. Obviously the next line follows on this idea. When she says she wishes she had been young and stupid so she could 'have the fun that you did' perhaps she's regretting the fact that she can't relate to this person because it was never something she was involved in. In 'Save Me' she refers to herself as a girl in need of a tourniquette - which perhaps could be taken as a reference to her desire to take heroin (as a tourniquette is used when injecting) (possibly a long shot) When she talks about searching the rubble it could be saying that she's lost this person to the habit - the rubble being the ruins of a life lost to drugs. As for the making a killing bit - that's lost on me.
I agree with I Lie Here Charmed. I super can relate to this song.
I agree with jukebox and I Lie Here Charmed. Defnintely references to drug addictions. May I add that the relationship between the narrartor and whoever the pronouns are referencing to did not end well. They may have both turned to drugs or alcohol but she is trying to change her ways
(I could follow you and search the rubble Or stay right here and save myself some trouble Or try to keep myself from seeing double)
Anyway you take it, its an amazing song that depicts how any kid of addiction controls your life and actions. All you care about is 'making a killing' or getting your next fix.
cool task for a class! I agree that it's about being selfdestructive, taking drugs.. What does 'pony up' mean?
"pony up" means to 'pay the price'.
In mexico we have a saying that goes "ya es mas costumbre que amor." which means: It's become more habit than it is love. I think this is what it has to do with the song.
I didn't think about the drug references but they do make sense. However, my take on it was more about how this relationship was such a strain, so that as smart as it would be to let it die, it was so much work that you don't want to give up on it. Lie here charmed was closest to what I thought it was about.
(I could follow you and search the rubble):
because to him its such a game, she's the one that needs to fight for the relationship, so her following him is her trying to keep him in it with her,
(or stay right here and save myself the trouble)
or she could just let him walk away.
(or try to keep myself from seeing double)
or she could try to stay in it in a detached way like he is. and try not to invest herself as much as she already has.
in the beginning she talks about him making a killing, because he is the one who is getting so much from her without giving up much of himself, and I think in the end she's thinking about turning it around, so that she can make a killing, and be the one who has him wrapped around her finger.
to me this song is about my first job. it was at a shop & was awesome & my friends worked there & my bosses were the best, but i worked at a checkout sometimes & i had to sell people smokes, which got 2 me after getting 2 know the regulars who came in. i felt like i was supporting the industry who make a living from killing people. my friends didn't like it either but weren't too fussed but to me i felt like there was blood on my hands and i was a sellout so i gave them notice & quit.
i would have gotten a massive bonus if i stayed a few days longer but i couldn't do it any longer, but they were understanding & i have no regrets.
sorry bout the life story but thats the song to me.
