I love this song. I first heard it when I was cycling through "Stark Naked and Absolutely live", (and the only reason I had that was because it was the only way I could get "Forever Young" through emusic).

I think its this idea that this person carries the life of him and her, and when the flame goes out, they'll be together, as he carries their flame.

This is a love song but it has religious overtones to it for sure. The singer of Alphaville is known to be religious.
