"Fast car" is kind of a continuation of Bruce Springsteen's "Born to Run." It has all the clawing your way to a better life, but in this case the protagonist never makes it with her love; in fact she is dragged back down by him.
There is still an amazing amount of hope and will in the lyrics; and the lyrics themselve rank and easy five. If only music was stronger it would be one of those great radio songs that you hear once a week 20 years after it was released. The imagery is almost tear-jerking ("City lights lay out before us", "Speeds so fast felt like I was drunk"), and the idea of starting from nothing and just driving and working and denigrating yourself for a chance at being just above poverty, then losing in the end is just painful and inspiring at the same time.

This song is epic, didn't really like it at first until I listened to it over and over. Genius lyrics, really makes you think about yourself. Talk about a message in the music. Strange that Freddie did die around 44 from a similar fate. Looking back too many of his songs lyrics were so prophetic to be coincidental. Absolutely love Queen, their intellect matched their talent, no other group like them.
@Queenforever13 I agree, very prophetic and epic song- like the battle between good and evil which is hinted at in a few of their songs...like Bohemian Rhapsody and Liar. So I think for Freddie to have ended his life recording a song like "My Life Has Been Saved" is very interesting indeed. Lyrics are "Oh Lord, I thank the Lord above, My life has been saved." Saved from the influence of those like Great King Rat? Surrendering to the Lord to be saved? So interesting!!!!!!
