Fading Lights Lyrics

Another time it might have been so different
oh if only we could do it all again
but now it's just another fading memory
out of focus, though the outline still remains

Far away, away, fading distant lights
leaving us all behind, lost in a changing world
and you know that these are the days of our lives
remember

Like the story that we wish was never ending
We know sometime we must reach the final page
still we carry on just pretending
that there'll always be one more day to go

Far away, away, fading distant lights
leaving us all behind, lost in a changing world
and you know that these are the days of our lives
so remember...

Another chance hello, another goodbye
and so many things we'll never see again
days of life that seemed so unimportant
they seem to matter but to count much later on

Far away, away, fading distant lights
leaving us all behind, lost in a changing world
and you know that these are the days of our lives
remember

Totally agree with the comments, this is one of my favourite tracks of all time ! Basically a nostalgic song about looking back and wishing to do it all again, with the realisation that those days are the ones to be remembered. It could've been written about the band's demise, but I believe it to be more about remembering your youth, growing old and wondering how things might've been different. Another slant on it could be a love interest that never blossomed ?!!

This is one of my favorite Genesis songs - especially I really like the 5-minute instrumental break in the middle of the song. This song has always held much meaning for me - it reminds us that we can only live each moment once. Though life is so long and most of our daily events seem so common and repetetive, each second is precious and should be savored. After the circumstances of our lives change and we part company with loved ones, we can never go back. So the events that seemed so common and boring at the time are cherished in memory in the end. "These are the days of our lives - remember"

I completely agree. The words and instrumental is awesome!

Some say that this song, which is on the last Genesis album with Phil Collins, is about the fast approaching end of the band. This has been denied by the band, and I believe that, but it still is a nice thought I think.

IMO this is about farewell. It could be as to Genesis as a band like anything else. Tony Banks wrote a song about the same time called "The final curtain" that was even more farewell - ending something.

Way past too powerful for me. A beautiful song...like most of the album. Some folks lives however get just too parallel though to bear to hear it all.
