Well written in the sense that it captures the sense of Russian music.
In regards to meaning, I think that the song represents the change from the totalitarian USSR to free Russia. This is best proven in the last phrase "Now your people are free"
It is actually about the Russian Revolution hence the "Mother Russia Dance of the tsars Hold up your heads Remember who you are"
The last Tsar Russia had was Tsar Nicholas who was overthrown before the end of WWI about 1917. The Russians revolted and forced the Tsar to abdicate. They eventually killed him and his family. But thats neither here nor there.
Uh Freeman your about a year off with that theory seeing as the album this songs on came out in 1990 and the fall of the stalinist regime was in 1991 (I say stalinist because it wasn't Leninist because the idea and pratice of a socialist-democracy was destoryed by stalin after Lenins death and was finally restored by Gobachev) But jarbas is right it's about the liberation of Mother Russia from the totalitarian reign of the tzar.
I don't know if anyone has ever felt this while listenning to an Iron Maiden song. Like you feel you lived in that era, not of the music but of the songs story. Hence, Mother Russia, in the beginning when the eerie chorus comes in I don't feel frightened at all, I feel calm and at the same time struggling through a slow snowy Russian winter.

Fantastic song about a seriously cool country.
I like it. It IS about the government change in Russia, you can be sure of that. However to just comment on the music for a second, I must say, it sounds Russian, and it is kind of an eerie anthem persay for the free Russia.
The song is very creepy sounding. Might just be me, but late at night in the dark, and you just listen to the instruments you get chills.
Russia means a lot to me, and this song just gets it all out.

I think this is a very true lyric and captures the attitude of Russia...the imagery in this song is quite good also. I want to hear this performed by a choir or something...would be absolutely amazing. The power...the might exerted in this song is just...
