Tonight, Tonight, Tonight Lyrics

I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey, but it's alright
Like a load on your back that you can't see, ooh but it's alright
Try to shake it loose, cut it free, just let it go, get it away from me.

Cos tonight, tonight, tonight - oh, I'm gonna make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

I'm going down, going down, like a monkey, ooh but it's alright
Try to pick yourself up, carry that weight that you can't see,
Don't you know it's alright
It's like a helter skelter, going down and down, round and round
But just get it away from me - oh.

Because tonight, tonight, tonight - oh
We're gonna make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

I got some money in my pocket, about ready to burn
I don't remember where I got it, I gotta get it to you
So please answer the phone, cos I keep calling, but you're never home
What am I gonna do
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh
I'm gonna make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

You keep telling me I've got everything, you say I've got everything I want
You keep telling me you're gonna help me, you're gonna help me, but you don't
But now I'm in too deep
You see it's got me so that I just can't sleep
Oh get me out of here, please get me out of here
Just help me I'll do anything, anything
If you'll just help me get out of here.

I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey, ooh but it's alright
It's like a load on your back that you can't see,
Ooh don't you know that it's alright
Just try to shake it loose, cut it free, let it go
But just get it away from me
Cos tonight, tonight, tonight - oh
Maybe we'll make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

Please get me out of here
Someone get me out of here
Just help me I'll do anything, anything
If you'll just help get me out of here
Tonight - oh, I'm gonna make it right
Tonight, tonight, tonight - oh.

Yes tonight, tonight, tonight - oh,
Yes I'm gonna make it right, tonight, tonight, tonight - oh...

The song is about drugs. An addict is desperate for his fix, but can't get hold of his dealer. Simple as that really!

This song is indeed about drug addiction, a druggie needing a fix and seeing his dealer. According to Mike Rutherford, it's broader meaning has to do with the nightlife in general, but originally it was about a drug addiction. The song was originally called "Monkey Zulu". Monkey was a term used for heroin. Zulu came from the sound of the synthesized percussion, which had an Afro-beat feel to it. Phil Collins wrote the lyrics.

If anyone has seen the video, it helps with interpretation. the "addict" needs his buyer. He keeps calling, wanting to get in contact to buy more. His money is burning, needing to get it to someone, possibly the buyer.

------------------- This song follows Invisible Touch, which also uses a lot of code words for drug use. However, I don't see radio friendly Phil as a badass in this phase of his career... The song reads like he was in a bad partnership with his agent or something.

Im pretty sure this song is about drugs, and his addiction. The lines, "I'm coming down, coming down like a monkey" and "Just try to shake it loose, cut it free, let it go" are pretty good evidence for this. Any other thoughts?

I never would've guessed hehe.I always laughed at that monkey part wondering if that's what he was really saying and why

It's defenitely about someone deciding to break an addiction... "Tonight, i'm gonna make it right"

However I'm confused on the "Please answer the phone" deal; either "the addict" is calling someone who can help - or he's having too much withdrawal and suddenly experiences a relapse... or a desire to relapse...

"I got some money in my pocket, about ready to burn I don't remember where I got it, I gotta get it to you"... hmmmm... assumed translation "I think i have enough to buy another bag..."

@budwheizzah1 I think when he says please answer the phone cuz I keep calling but you're never home that he could be he's calling dealer or he might be calling someone to help talk him out getting anything. The beautiful thing about songs is sometimes it's fun to play with a double meaning it's all in the person that's listening to it. He definitely needing some help from one of his sober friends when he says he'll do anything if you'll just help get him out of here. Wonderful song. Phil Collins and Genesis Kick-Ass

Yes, it would seem that this song is about drugs, but you can also interpret it from the "Blade Runner" style video as maybe being someone in a relationship who is mentally disturbed, or perhaps even someone who has been kidnapped or assaulted.

Before the song was released as a single the intro to this song was used in a beer commercial. Michelobe I think.

Sounded like the coolest song. Then when I heard the song it was a disappointment.

Alcohol is a drug, so if the song is negative about drugs it's kind of ironic that it was used as I said.
