Sea Of Madness Lyrics
Out in the street somebody's crying,
Out in the night the fires burn,
Maybe tonight somebody's crying,
Reached the point of no return.
Oh - my eyes they see but I can't believe,
Oh - my heart is heavy as I turn my back and leave.
Chorus:
Like the eagle and the dove,
Fly so high on wings above,
When all you see can only bring you sadness,
Like a river we will flow,
On towards the sea we go,
When all you do can only bring you sadness,
Out on the sea of madness.
Somewhere I hear a voice that's calling,
Out in the dark there burns a dream,
You got to hope when you are falling,
To find the world that you have seen.
Oh - my eyes they see but I can't believe,
Oh - my heart is heavy as I turn my back and leave.
Chorus:
Like the eagle and the dove,
Fly so high on wings above,
When all you see can only bring you sadness,
Like a river we will flow,
On towards the sea we go,
When all you do can only bring you sadness,
Out on the sea of madness.
It's madness,
The sun don't shine
On the sea of madness,
There ain't no wind to fill your sails,
Madness,
When all you see can only bring you sadness
On towards the sea we go...
Out in the night the fires burn,
Maybe tonight somebody's crying,
Reached the point of no return.
Oh - my heart is heavy as I turn my back and leave.
Like the eagle and the dove,
Fly so high on wings above,
When all you see can only bring you sadness,
Like a river we will flow,
On towards the sea we go,
When all you do can only bring you sadness,
Out on the sea of madness.
Out in the dark there burns a dream,
You got to hope when you are falling,

On towards the sea we go,

Out on the sea of madness.

On the sea of madness,
There ain't no wind to fill your sails,
Madness,
When all you see can only bring you sadness
On towards the sea we go...

Having studied this for a while I believe that Sea Of Madness is about the point at which the soul separates from the body (point of physical death) after an accident (eg Car or Motorbike) and the spirit is surveying what just happened.
Out in the street somebody’s crying (Shock and mourning of the witnesses and even possibly family) Out in the night the fires burn (The burning wreckage)
Reached the point of no return (Just before going into the light)
My eyes they see but they can’t believe (“What the hell just happened to me!!!”) My heart is heavy as I turn my back and leave (“Damn it! I’m not ready! ... I don’t want to linger here”)
Etc... this is the best I have I’m afraid
This is a very good song, underrated.
I think this song can possibly be about WWII. I have a rather good explaination for this.
The first verse is about London burning. The Nazis tried to raze London to the ground. People were obviously crying. The part about his eyes seeing and not believing and his heart being heavy, means that he realizes that there is little he can do about the situation. This is from the perspective of someone who is going to go fight the war.
The chorus is obviously about storming the beaches of Normandie. There were paratroopers dropped inside the German lines, as well as the troop transporters which dropped soldiers off near the beaches. This is the sea of madness. The beaches were quite chaotic and maddening.
The second verse is about a soldier who is on the beaches. However, there is still a hope, a dream if you will that they will succeed. Someone is calling out the name of a fallen companion.
The final bit is about how depressing the beaches were. So many bodies, so much madness and sadness. The sea in this is of course the sea of madness. Which is what war is really. It is a sea of horrific events.
At least this is my interpretation/meaning of the song. Somewhere in Time is probably my favourite Iron Maiden album. Which is ironic, because Bruce Dickenson really hates it.
While that makes sense, this song seems deeper than that. Just saying.

As for Somewhere in Time being your favourite, that's because it's the best.

Good theory, but I think it might be more about being lost in your emotions. The first verse could be about all the depressing crap on the news.

The last verse or altered chorus makes it sound like it might be about suicide.

This is a good rock song, not my favorite off of the "Somewhere In Time" album. The part I like most about the song is when Bruce sings "Oh - my eyes they see but I can't believe, Oh - my heart is heavy as I turn my back and leave." Best part of the song and worth listening to just for it.
why is there only 1 comment here...
this song kicks your ass
the beginning is badass
OUT ON THE SEA OF MADNESSSSSSS (do dodolittle do do dodolittle doo)
Failing society, one member of the society decides to bail out before everything crashes and burns in the "sea of madness".
I love the bassline in this song. It has an odd feel that reminds me of a tilting boat. The "Sea" is just metaphoric, of course.
Somewhere in Time is one of my favorite records!!!
I always thought that the song is about a character who have died and watches when the world is going chaotic as he flies away to eternity.
I took an LSD trip a couple days ago and in a very difficult moment while tripping balls I listened to this song.
Somewhere I hear a voice that's calling, Out in the dark there burns a dream, You got to hope when you are falling, To find the world that you have seen.
This part perfectly describes what I felt when I went through the ego-death experience. It's kinda scary and unbelievable. You feel like you should cling to your reality because there is something that is valuable for you here. If you can't surrender to this experience (and I apparently wasn't) it may feel like a pure madness, like you're falling towards the unknown. Like death.
Somehwere in time is a ok album only a couple songs like this is what keeps me listening to it.
