It's Gonna Get Better Lyrics
Reach out, hands in the air,
Don't care just what they're saying
Hold out, just keep on hoping against hope
That it's gonna get better
Don't worry, there's no hurry for you, for me,
Everything's gonna come around
Shout out, someone will listen to you, to me,
Someone's gonna see
He calls me over and, calls me brother and I know
always fighting and moonlighting and, well it never ends
in the city, if you're all alone
there's a sister and she's standing next to her man
in the darkness you feel the sharpness of steel
and it's always there, in the city, and you're all alone
So reach out, hands in the air,
Don't care just what they're saying
Hold out, just keep on hoping against hope
That it's gonna get better
Don't worry, there's not hurry for you, for me,
Everything's gonna come around
Shout out, someone will listen to you, to me,
Someone's gonna see...
If it's gonna get better, it starts with a feeling
If it's gonna get better, it's gonna take time
If it's gonna get better, we gotta start now
cos I know, everybody can feel it
and I know, everybody will see it
cos it shows, and that shows I'm not dreaming
cos you know, and I know, it's time for a change
Don't care just what they're saying
Hold out, just keep on hoping against hope
That it's gonna get better
Don't worry, there's no hurry for you, for me,
Everything's gonna come around
Shout out, someone will listen to you, to me,
Someone's gonna see
always fighting and moonlighting and, well it never ends
in the city, if you're all alone
there's a sister and she's standing next to her man
in the darkness you feel the sharpness of steel
and it's always there, in the city, and you're all alone
Don't care just what they're saying
Hold out, just keep on hoping against hope
That it's gonna get better
Don't worry, there's not hurry for you, for me,

No one has commented on this song?! Under-rated song from the GENESIS album. I love it because, while the lyrics are optimistic (for the most part), the music, and Phil's delivery, sens a different message to me - like he knows he can hope and pray but that inside he knows nothing will actually change. The hopeful lyrics but the sad melody make for a interesting combo, and it makes the somg stand out for me.
I only realized relatively recently, but the composition of this song is actually pretty weird - it's mostly in 12/4 time signature, and the chords are pretty strange as well, because there are so many different major chords played in the chord progressions (classic Tony Banks style), implying that the key keeps changing back and forth throughout the verses and chorus. The fact there are so many different major chords played in succession is part of what makes it so recognizable as being written by Genesis.
I absolutely adore this song. Especially where the "If Its gonna get better"starts up to the ending. Just breathtaking, awesome, Genesis! And the live version on the box set is f**king incredible! Terrible how this gem seems to get forgotten and unnoticed. Its one of the brightest spots of the later Genesis library. One that shows they didnt completely lose their prog during those years.
