Modern Boys Lyrics
Come unto me my winter son
We could lie on the rails
And when the morning comes
We'll be miles away
Miles away
Slipping away while the city sleeps
Running away from this cruel disease
Miles away, miles away
Modern boys, modern boys
Hand in hand
Sick of the fear
Chasing away all the hungry years
We're the modern boys
Come onto me my sickly thing
We could lie on the rails
But to really win we'll just drive away, drive away
Yes, the world calls my international
So let the decades die
Let the parties fall
And we'll be miles away, miles away
Because we'll be living like
Modern boys, modern boys
Hand in hand
Sick of the fear
Chasing away all the hungry years
Into the night, under the stars
Jumping the lights in the silent cars
He's on your left
I'm on your right
It's so easy in the concrete night
We could lie on the rails
And when the morning comes
We'll be miles away
Miles away
Running away from this cruel disease
Miles away, miles away
Hand in hand
Sick of the fear
Chasing away all the hungry years
We're the modern boys
We could lie on the rails
But to really win we'll just drive away, drive away
So let the decades die
Let the parties fall
And we'll be miles away, miles away
Because we'll be living like
Modern boys, modern boys
Hand in hand
Sick of the fear
Chasing away all the hungry years
Jumping the lights in the silent cars
He's on your left
I'm on your right
It's so easy in the concrete night

I think it's about young companions running from oppression, willing to lose everything in order to live freely. This being Suede, I can't avoid the suspicion that it's about running from the oppression of a homophobic society.
I agree that the first part may be about running from the oppression of a homophobic society, but the second part I think is Brett´s personal and about some desire for running from life he lived, the last section may be pointed at anyone trying something like that - modern boy is who finds the strenght to that
and the verse "He's on your left, I'm on your right" may refer to the blessed Trinity and also Brett´s and His ideologic support
