Year Of The Parrot Lyrics
In the year of our lord,
call it 1994,
a fine vintage of mimicry.
There are those that take their sound,
from someone else's toil.
Liking to parrots, you see.
I've seen the likes of Kate Bush
and Van Morrison,
teaching the parrot to sing.
Yake a Zeppelin riff,
and you alter it a bit,
you make lots of money.
It's called plagiarism.
You want some of that cheese,
just take a big ol' bite.
Careful not to choke on it, please.
Now here we go.
It's called plagiarism.
call it 1994,
a fine vintage of mimicry.
from someone else's toil.
Liking to parrots, you see.
and Van Morrison,
teaching the parrot to sing.
and you alter it a bit,
you make lots of money.
It's called plagiarism.
just take a big ol' bite.
Careful not to choke on it, please.
It's called plagiarism.

I love how tongue-in-cheek this one is, Claypool really takes a stab at modern music. Way to stand up, Les! He might even be talking about rap and hip-hop seeing as to how much they recycle from older works and after the song becomes popular, most think that he/she was the originator of the song!
this song is a statement on modern music, or even media for that matter. it seems in this age, creativity is a rare thing. people are recycling old songs, old movies and even old stories.
to say this is one of primus's worst, is to say that you are one of primus worst critics. as a band primus had an uncanny ability to maintain unique style and originality. a lot of people give this album shit, but it was merely just another era in the evolution of Primus.
I guess it's also about individuality - how it's best to be different from everything else musically and in every other way as a person (well, to an extent, mainly its how it's best to do what you want and be different in certain ways, regardless of what people think).
Everyone copies brilliant artists like Kate Bush and Van Morrison, that's what this song is about.
And only another original act like Primus can get away with singing about it.
So I always had a bit of a theory that the first verse or two were a jab at Korn. If you listen to the intro to their song Blind it is basically the same as the Too Many Puppies intro. Blind was Korn's first single from their self titled album in 1994, Too Many Puppies was 1990. Or I'm a crazy person, whatever works.
Who is the lord og 1994?
of,,, sorry
actually as a big fan of primus I think of it as one of their best,... love that theer are 6 guitar solos///
this song is one of their BEST by the way...lord of 1994 must be Cobain and the legion of musicians trying to copy the 'alternative' sound...i don't think Les is anti-hip-hop
my favorite primus album
