I Write The Songs Lyrics

I've been alive forever, and I wrote the very first song
I put the words and the melodies together
I am music and I write the songs

I write the songs that make the whole world sing
I write the songs of love and special things
I write the songs that make the young girls cry
I write the songs, I write the songs

My home lies deep within you
And I've got my own place in your soul
Now, when I look out through your eyes
I'm young again, even though I'm very old

I write the songs that make the whole world sing
I write the songs of love and special things
I write the songs that make the young girls cry
I write the songs, I write the songs

Oh my music makes you dance
And gives you spirit to take a chance
And I wrote some rock 'n' roll so you can move
Music fills your heart
Well, that's a real fine place to start
It's from me it's for you
It's from you, it's for me
It's a worldwide symphony

I write the songs that make the whole world sing
I write the songs of love and special things
I write the songs that make the young girls cry
I write the songs, I write the songs

I am music (music) and I write the songs

The above poster (Matthew...) was right... the meaning is as follows:

I've been alive forever --- (Satan, with a God-complex, wants to be seen as eternal and not created) And I wrote the very first song --- (from antiquity he claims to have written the first song) I put the words and the melodies together I am music and I write the songs --- (Notice, "I AM" -- this is a popular ploy used in music, concerts, etc. to take the place of the (Triune) Jehovah God -- Satan is saying that as the alleged self-existent one, in the stead of God, he is music and he writes these songs that corrupt the masses)

I write the songs that make the whole world sing --- (the secular world follows his musical lead) I write the songs of love and special things --- (not true love but Satan's false concept of love) I write the songs that make the young girls cry --- (ever see the images of girls crying over Barry, The Beatles, One Direction, etc. -- he causes lust, idolatry, pining, jealousy, envy, and other ill-passions to arise via his music) I write the songs, I write the songs --- (He is telling you twice here, for emphasis, how much more do you need to hear?)

My home lies deep within you --- (For the Christian, Christ is within them -- but Satan and the passions he stirs up from mankind's own indwelling sin is deep within the unbeliever) And I've got my own place in your soul --- (Get it? He's in your soul if you are not submitted to Christ by the free and sovereign grace of the Triune Godhead) Now when I look out through your eyes (he possesses you, looking through your eyes if you are not in Christ) I'm young again, even though I'm very old (Again, going to the antiquity of the devil though he has not been around forever... since he, himself, was created)

Oh, my music makes you dance --- (The rhythm takes over; trance like states are induced; "a" - "muse"-ment -- which means against deep thought -- is induced, etc.) And gives your spirit to take a chance --- (he gives your spirit to take a chance in repeatedly rebelling against the God and Saviour who, in Christ Jesus, died for His elect) And I wrote some rock 'n' roll so you can move --- (same as above; he wants to "move" you) Music fills your heart, well, that's a real fine place to start --- (he starts with your heart, passions, and takes your mind, body, and soul)

It's from me, it's for you It's from you, it's from me It's a worldwide symphony --- (Here you see the symbiotic relationship... he fuels the sin of mankind, mankind loves to have it so, and together they make wonderful music together)

I am music and I write the songs --- (just in case you missed it earlier, there's that I AM again. Every wonder why so many artists have albums and tours starting with I AM -- Jay-Z had the "I am what I am" commercials -- a play on the biblical "I AM that I AM" -- Alicia Keys had the "As I am" album; Beyoncé has the "I Am... Sasha Fierce" and "I Am... World Tour" -- Eminem has "The way I am" -- Lil Wayne has "I am music I & II" Reba McEntire has "All the Women I Am" -- and the list goes on...

Many mainstream, secular songs have multiple levels... the surface level; the sensual/emotional level; and the (dark/evil) spiritual level -- this one is no different.

To all of you Bible thumpers out there who think this son is about Satan...congratulations! You are 100% WRONG. Bruce Johnston of The Beach Boys composed this song. He said it was about of where music comes from. In his eyes, it comes from GOD.

@Showguy Thank you for those words! :) Finally, someone who actually agrees with me. "I write the songs" is about music, it is written from the PoV of music as if it were anthropomorphized, and it talks about the things music can do to make our lives better. Music has indeed been alive forever - it has been an art form since donkeys' years ago. It wrote the very first song - goes without saying. The line "I am music and I write the songs" couldn't be clearer - it is Music itself speaking here. Bruce Johnston did a great...

matthewpng, your ill-conceived theory is refuted by the line "I write the songs of love and special things." These are the enemies of the devil. As it says in the book of John, "God is love." God is the antithesis of the devil, and He is love.

Yes I have to agree that God is love but I also have to agree with MatthewPng. I've told the same thing to my two boys long before I came accross this web-form. If you remember. Satan came to Jesus as a angle of light aka a good guy. Do you not think that he would come to you threw a love song. He would love you to hell if you gave him the chance.

The vanity on this web page truly amazes me. "ooh, look how good a Christian I am by finding a ridculously tenuous link to the devil in this song". Give it up, people! Your sort often seem to find the devil in things you don't like.

Please get over yourselves. You give Christians a really bad name.

Either that, or we use the reason that God has given to see what is really quite obvious.

Srsly, is it just me, or does all 14 commentators here so far seem to have some need of professional help?!

"I write the songs" is simply an ode to music - albeit written from the point of view of music as if it were anthropomorphized. It is not the first ode to music, and it will not be the last. We all love music, do we not (is that not why we are all on SongMeanings in the first place)? What better than a song that praises the beauty and versatility of music as an art - such as "I write the songs", for instance? Music has been alive forever, people have been making music since goodness knows when; and it goes without saying, music itself can be credited with writing the very first song. Through the lips of people like you and I. This is why we still enjoy music today, in all its varying genres.

When I say that "I write the songs" is not the first ode to music, and will not be the last, here is my methodology to prove:

In the early 1600s, William Shakespeare wrote a famous ode to music in his play Twelfth Night, later set to music by Henry Purcell - "If music is the fruit of love, play on, play on" (sung here by soprano Kathleen Battle: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZPCDas6U4aI).

In 1817, Franz Schubert wrote "An die Musik" (dedicated to music), also known by its first line "Du holde Kunst" (you pure art form), which talks about how music can transport you to a different world. (Sung here by Elisabeth Schwarzkopf: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bm_AKMV0ME0)

And more recently in 1999, English Eurodance singer Anna "Lolly" Kumble released her debut single, "Viva la radio" (which you can see its official music video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXIPQBXHS7I), which glorifies the then-new technology of the MP3 player and how it enables one to listen to one's favorite songs on the go. A modern ode to music, but still, an ode to music nonetheless.

Music is one of the oldest forms of art. It will never die. It will always exist, and will continue to develop itself with time. The music we enjoy so much today is a unity in diversity that comes in so many genres, styles, and more. "I am music and I write the songs" - I think the line could not be clearer, it is music personified saying that it has given us all the songs we enjoy today. If you don't enjoy music, why did you even sign up with SongMeanings at all?

So please, please, Mr Matthew whatever-your-name-is, stop with all this "Jesus" and "Bible" obsession, and start focussing on the music instead, and enjoy it, like any normal person would. If you want to continue obsessing about your "Jesus" and "Bible" nonsense, please go to your cathedrals, suck up to your clergy, continue giving them millions of pounds every week so that their pop-singer wives can travel the world, do what you wanna do - but srsly, don't come and bring your "Jesus" and "Bible" comments to a song that has nothing whatsoever to do with that.

ALERT PLEASE READ when i first listened to this song, it was beautiful. after all, i'm a fan of old music. so i took the effort to listen to the lyrics, and then i got a partial shock. something was not right about the soothing melody and lyrics. and that's why i decided to warn you who decide to come here to analyse lyrics of songs. call me a fanatic or crazy oversensitive bored fella with mass paranoia...but listen. possibly, it's just a simple song about him writing songs. but my interpretation of this song, and true meanings of good songs always need some interpretation, is that this 'writer' of songs is the devil. rather, lucifer.

i have been alive forever...lucifer was a fallen angel. technically wasn't forever because God was first. but lucifer existed long enough, before the world started, and forever refers to an extremely long period of time. i wrote the very first song...lucifer before fallen, was one of the 'greater' angels and he wrote the first song. the next 2 lines are him declaring it further. let me skip the chorus first. my home lies deep within you...yes he is in your heart because we as men are naturally prone to evil and in giving in to sin we have allowed him to live within us. I've got my own place in your soul...furthers that. Now when i look out through your eyes i'm young again even though i'm very old...lucifer is very old but he's seducing us with the world or in the case his music and taking his place in us. the music makes you dance, doesn't it? sometimes we don't even think...the rhythms and melodies just weave their way into us. gives you spirit to take a chance...to forget rationalism and makes us want to be fun. i wrote some rock and roll so you can move. Music fills your heart...yes emotions taking over...wel that's a fine place to start...ahh can u now see what i'm talking about? Isn't it really a good place for the devil to attack us from, or thru? It's from me, it's for you. His music, to fill you. to lie to you. It's from me, it's for me. See, it's for himself actually...it's stealing you and controlling you.. it's a worldwide symphony. the world is engrossed in it and may not see it. even those who suspect are pushed by worldly pressure to see things the way the world sees it. the symphony is grand...if you've listened to symphonies not just on radios you know its effect. i am music...lucifer created music, he is music in that sense....and he writes the songs...these songs...

the chorus is just furthering all these...

see it from my perspective for a while...i urge you to be careful.

make you fall asleep...just like lullabies? that's even more scary. disarming effects.

So just last week I was relaxing in my car and listening to this song, I actually thought about the lyrics and came up with the exact thing you said in your meaning. Yes according to us the angel previously known as lucifer has been alive forever, and was the worship leader in heaven. Im not sure about the first song part but it could be that he inspired the first song here on earth, or it is possible he did write the first song in heaven. who could prove that though? everything else you said is surely true. And...

@MatthewPng Exactly wrong. It's God, according the songwriter.

...but he didn't write this one

@afropath no he didn't , the former drummer of the Beach Boys did. The song is really about the spirit of music. The lyrics, the melody and the harmonies and most importantly the inspiration.

Odd theory there Matthewpng. I think you are totally wrong. This isn't about a single person writing songs.

This is a song about song writers... some of whom obviously existed thousands of years ago. Music transforms us and takes us to a different time and place. The writers of music want to take you to the same place they were when they wrote it. The songwriter could have been long deceased, but you are feeling the exact same thing he felt when the song was written, even though you may be 1,000 year younger. That's why he says "when I look out through your eyes, I am young again, even though I am very old." His songs never die, because they all take us to the place he created so long ago.

We've all got the ability to be transformed by music, which is the 'place in your soul' he is referring to.

A great song, which is inspiring to other songwriters.

Actually I think old Matt is on to something. I thought this song was cool, but just now reading the Lyrics I'm like Oh My God!!! This totally sounds like Satan. Then i read Matt's comments and saw I'm not the only one who has picked up on this. Why and how could music write the songs? It makes absolutely no sense that way. This song is very ambiguous but it does seem satanic and in nature. This song is about one song writer is saying he has been around forever, wrote the first song, etc alt the way up to rock and roll. Who could live that long on earth but Satan? Now as for heartbeats comments about love and special things being the antithesis of Satan that may be true. But the nature of Satan is also to deceive so he uses any and all purposes to deceive including love. Heck how many times has someone said I love you and then killed there partner or friend. That ain't love! You can say or write I love you 1000 times. It don't mean nothing unless it's followed by actions. Remember in the bible Satan often tempted people with the words of love. Satan used God's word against people by turning them around , taking them out of context ,or telling half truths. So yeah this song is actually kind of creepy when you think of it. Sort of a sugar-coated version of "Sympathy For The Devil".
