Fantasy Lyrics
This song isn't about the afterlife; religious people will find religious meaning in anything. Maurice White was inspired to write this after watching Close Encounters of the Third Kind ("take a ride in the sky on a ship"), not after having some religious epiphany.
The song simply says that every achieved dream or aspiration has its beginning in fantasy, and not to take fantasy for granted. It's that simple.
I totally agree with Theo. This is not about the 'afterlife', but about life. About who we are and who we want to be. About what we do and what we love to do. About the world around us and thw world we'd like to create. It's about the compass that's called 'fantasy', that enables us to envision things and worlds we cannot see - but that nevertheless gives meaning and direction to our lives.

But maybe there's a connection here. You dream. I dream. We may dream the same, although we live in different worlds and live different lives, and maybe we don't appear to be similar on the outside. As Sting put it: "I hope the Russians love their children too' - of course they do. All Russians envision a better life for their children - just as we do. That's the connection, and we should put our hope there.
Each of us has a tiny little space on Planet Earth - yet each of us has a space, a mind, a life full of dreams, endless desires - and no one is going to take that away from us. Now don't be afraid to dream, to imagine a better life for yourself, your brother, your sister, your children. It's the fantasy that will enrich your real life.
Now read the first verse again.
@theo47 agreed, but it has many layers to it. It has deep mystical and esoteric meaning behind the lyrics. A lot of EWF's beliefs are from Kemetic Sciences (Egyptian Sciences) which they depicted on their album covers. There are other metaphysical thoughts so I am not saying they only followed Kemetic.

I agree that it's about the spirit making the transition to the afterlife...the life review, your soul is in ecstasy, the glowing light. I had always liked this song, but hadn't given the lyricss much thought until I had a strange experience connected to it. A friend of mine who loved life tremendously was killed in a mototcycle accident. I was driving home from the funeral and felt that he must be really free now and on an amazing trip now leaving the Earth, kind of imagining him watching all of us. "Fantasy" came on the radio just then, and I was amazed when I really listened to the lyrics. It fit perfectly. Now I always think of Joel when I hear it. I think Earth Wind and Fire were/are way ahead of their time. The lyrics sound like "New Age" philosophy. Wonderful song!!
this song reminds my boyfriend of me--so it's kind of special to us. i came here to see what some other opinions were, but there aren't any.
I love this song we're playing it in my high school jazz band and it's been stuck in my head for weeks : )
I remember listening to this song randomly on the CD player, driving, heart-broken, during some evening in the army. always stirs up that memory for me. a wonderful piece from their classic All'n'All.
This song is about finding your destiny. Fantasizing about your dreams, will take you where you need to go. Sometimes taking a trip to an unknown land can inspire you, and you can find other people or beings who've gone through the same struggles. This is a very powerful song.
I think this song is about optimism and law of attraction. The more we fantasize, dream or think about something that we want, there will be more possibility for us to attract it. It supports positive thinking so that we won't lose hope. The song is saying that if we fantasize about our dreams, it will come true.
Sorry religious folk, no deity here. From Maurice, the songwriter's very own words: "The song 'Fantasy' is motivated about escapism in the sense of living on a world that is untrue, a world that is unjust, a world that is very selfish and envious, there is a place that everyone can escape to which is their own fantasy. I had to write the song in the sense of sharing this place with people. It's an escape mechanism."
This is one of my favorite songs. And yes I still like some old songs still. Also this song I have repeat on my I phone 5. And speaking of song. This makes me think of my life now I think of it.
this is about the collective consciousness and everyone being able to experience it in the way they will. every person living their own dream out but it all being impermanent and leading to the merging with source eventually.
