Ironspy

God, but I love this song. Okay, this is basically what it means to me. We've all known a person who loves to martyr themselves, who loves to see themselves higher than everyone, yet acts like they'd die for us. They make you feel like you don't deserve being around them, that you're somehow 'less' than them, and though they constantly tell you to think for yourself and grow a back bone, you still feel dependant on them because they seem so... well, good, for lack of a better word.

This is about realizing that you don't really need them to be a good person. That sort of discovery is often very painful and it hits you like a lightning bolt :"Iron in my spine's conducting lightning' - you feel furious at them for keeping you down, and at yourself for letting them affect you like that.

Quite an interpretation, but I'd have to say I disagree.

To me, this song seems to be from the point of view of someone who is having an internal conflict about someone else. This other person is in a relationship with someone else, and this causes the singer great pain to see them together. So she tries to convince herself that she never wanted the person to begin with; but it's not working.

"Iron spy I didn't hear you coming from behind. Yes, I'm afraid to turn around, To watch you point and whisper like a child."

The "Iron spy" is the feelings she feels for the person, always sneaking up on her and causing her pain. So she's afraid to acknowledge it.

"Please leave -- stay... I promise I'll try harder now. You've made the cut, and stayed to watch it bleed, Just making sure, your secret stays with me..."

Further conflict with her own feelings. She convinces her self she doesn't feel anything for the person momentarily, then he/she does something that brings those feelings back. Not sure how to interpret the "secret", honestly.

"Iron spy The lines just keep escaping me. And people on the trains play little games To keep their guns from firing rage restrained. "

She really wants to tell this person how she feels about them, but knows she can't because of the relationship that person is already in. So it keeps building up inside her to the point where she has to completely distract herself to keep from going ballistic on the person/anyone in range.

But that's just my interpretation. I'm a hardcore Melissa Kaplan fan. =D
