You think you're denying me of something
Well I've got plenty
You're the one who's missing out
But you won't notice
'Till after five years
If you'll live that long
You'll wake up
All loveless
I dare you
To take me on
I dare you
To show me your palms
I'm so bored with cowards
That say they want
Then they can't handle
You can't handle love
You can't handle love
You just can't handle
I dare you
To take me on
I dare you
To show me your palms
What's so scary ?
Not a threat in sight
You just can't handle
You can't handle love
You can't handle love, baby
You can't handle love
It's obvious
You can't handle
I dare you
To take me on
I dare you
To show me your palms
I'm so bored of cowards
That say they want
Then they can't handle
You can't handle love, baby
You can't handle love,
It's obvious
You can't handle
I dare you, I dare you
I dare you, I dare you
Well I've got plenty
You're the one who's missing out
But you won't notice
'Till after five years
If you'll live that long
You'll wake up
All loveless
To take me on
I dare you
To show me your palms
That say they want
Then they can't handle
You can't handle love
You just can't handle
To take me on
I dare you
To show me your palms
Not a threat in sight
You just can't handle
You can't handle love
You can't handle love
It's obvious
You can't handle
To take me on
I dare you
To show me your palms
That say they want
Then they can't handle
You can't handle love,
It's obvious
You can't handle
I dare you, I dare you

Per the palm reference: When someone suspects a child of taking something, a child will often outstretch his arms and open his hands to show that he has nothing grasped wihin his palms. Bjork may be implying just that...he (immature much like a child when it comes to love) now has nothing (no love, etc).
Excellent thought! I understood the general message of this song, but couldn't precisely decipher that "show me your palms" lyric. Your interpretation is the most insightful I've read, and most likely what Bjork intended. Especially how she repeatedly barrages him with that same demand, "I DARE YOU! I DARE YOU-oo-OO-oo-OOOO!!! To show me your palms!" It's as if he keeps refusing because he knows he has nothing to show for the time; he knows and she knows, and she wants him to admit it.

Great song. Bjork is talking to a former lover who, after 5 years, decided he wants to be with her..but she's not having it. Bjork wanted this guy to be straight up with her, but he was acting as if he was afraid of love (for guys, i.e., commitment) and she's letting him know what a coward and fool he is. He said he wanted love, but he proved otherwise.
To me, this song is basically saying, you broke up with me, but it's your loss; you can't love, maybe the guy's a commitment phobe. So he'll be the one regretting it when he ends up lonely in five years. He "just can't handle love", and she's "bored with cowards" who can't...relates to a lot of cowardly men who can't commit emotionally.
the meaning of this song is pretty obvious...the primal beat is pretty damn awesome here though!
This song is explosive! I love how it builds! I love the passion in her voice and the anger and then how she'll come down and speak gently to show she's fine. There are no tears. She's almost laughing with her words but not. I love this song. I love how she says, "I have plenty." Powerful. Love this song.
I have always understood the line: "You can't handle love" as no-one can handle love. If you want love, you have to fight for it - if you don't fight for it, you're a coward. She dares him to fight for their love but he is a coward.
I love how generally angry this song is; very different for Bjork.
The first time I listened to this song, I laughed out loud during the part when she sings "if you live that long".
Ahhh, the end of this song is bliss, when she goes "I da~re you" four times, and then the screeching vibrato strings. It's like everything I ever wanted sex and wine to be!
After a breakup, the speaker taunts her former lover that he's unable to "handle" love and that in the end he'll be the unhappy one.
