I picked this song as my wife's and I song about a month into our relationship. This was our first dance. After I first heard this song I knew that if we were lucky enough to still be together someday and get married this would be our song. And yes just like when first danced to it on our 1 month anniversary and at the wedding I sang it to her.......yep I'm just a little cheesey and this will be the only cheesey post I make just had to.
I feel that this was written to someone he love but she's not sure yet of his sincerity.

So in the song he wants to prove his love and would do everything for a chance to prove it. He promised to protect her, be there especially on times of difficulty, promised to make her happy and would even go to the ends of the earth for her to make her feel his love.

I'm going to go amazingly cliche here and say that it's about some guy confessing his love for a girl.

Actually Bob has written many great love songs, some of them are kind of hidden in deep symbolism etc. but theyre still love songs. But I think that this is probably his most straight-forward love songs, and his best other than Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands and Sara. This song makes me sad. I'm 14 years old and I don't feel like I have a lot of people in my life right now, and most of them think I'm screwing up my life, and this song reminds me of someone I would love to have. I wish someone would just hold me and make all this pain in my life disapear.
