My Smile Is A Rifle Lyrics

My smile is a rifle
Won't you give it a try?
La la la ... ah
So you like the way we dance maybe
When notes come to you, ooh ooh
You know I love you
You are all over me, oh yeah ...

- solo -

My smile is a rifle
And what are you?
My smile is a rifle
I'm pointing it at you
My smile is a rifle
You're always you ...

I interpret it as whenever he's happy it hurts other people; "His smile is a rifle." More often than not in life to ascend ourselves we step on the backs of others. He feels that if hes happy someone else isn't. The time he wrote this he was on the road with the peppers and was miserable, but he knew the things he wanted to change would make others unhappy.

It is my favorite song so for me: "my smile is rifle" (meaning that the smile you show to the world is just a message you send and it doesn't have to be truly happy you can just pretend, you smile despite being extremely down because you don't want people to know... for various reasons) "wont you give it a try?" (as if he "suggests" to try? because life becomes relatively easier when you don't have to share difficult emotions with the rest of the world, when you don't understand what's going on on your head and don't know how to explain it, or you're ashamed to ask for help) "So you like the way we dance maybe When notes come to you, ooh ooh" (so you try, life becomes a little bit better) You know I love you You are all over me, oh yeah (I interpret it this way, that when we've stopped sharing these real emotions and we send a fake smile to the world, and these words that he says here are very emotional words, it shows that we lose ourselves, we say things that are not true. we become dependent on our lies and start to weave around hiding emotions, slowly losing ourselfs on this) those strange sounds that drastically increase, and when he starts singing more and more shrilly. I think this is the moment when you get lost, the moment when you stop hearing yourself because there are too many voices in your head that you don't know if they are yours anymore, because you don't know who you really are. "My smile is a rifle And what are you?" (this time he want to make you realize that your smile is fake and what have you become now? who are you now after taking it away from yourself?) "My smile is a rifle I'm pointing it at you" (your smile is fake and others see it... but they probably don't realize it because you hide it well, they dont realise how bad it can be) "My smile is a rifle you're always you waving from the wind" (your smile is fake but you are always yourself and you can't lose yourself despite this it may seem to you that your sense of self is fading) so in general, i think this song is about how we hide emotions, especially from those we love. about the consequences of hiding emotions. about losing yourself. i think john's songs are specially written in such a way that everyone can interpret them in their own way. it's not about heroin, when john was writing it I'm not even sure if he even tried it. it could be about stimulants in general and how stimulants cause false joy and how they make you lose your sense of self, but the message is more or less the same. I hope I wrote it in a way that is understandable, such emotional things are hard to explain and English is not my first language...
