Nowhere To Go

this is probably my favorite melissa song. it is so powerful. extremely commanding. it can be interpreted to be about any sort of scorned relationship, but logically it is about a gay relationship and having nowhere to go because the people around them "never woke up from the american dream." it's not only such a passionate love song; it also delivers a poignant message about our often close-minded society. here is a couple so much in love but they have to hide away because society cannot accept them- they don't understand the relationship because they label it as wrong and don't really look at the people involved. an absolute musical gem. the pain in her voice during the lines "dance with me forever/this moment is divine/i'm so close to heaven/this hell is not mine/this hell is not mine" never fails to give me goosebumps. beautiful.

This is my absolute favorite by Melissa Etheridge. It's about being young and free and having no boundaries. "Nowhere To Go" However, it can also be about being older in the sense that society doesn't think that they should be together. I could listen to this song over and over and it would never get old.

I agree with youreyes, being about a gay relationship, or more generally an otherwise scorned relationship. But it appears that the narrator does not know if the other person has the same feelings towards her. In the first verse she says that they can talk until dawn, or maybe more if it ends up that way. In the second verse, it is as if she wants to use the wine to seduce the other. It seems to me that she does not know if this other person is gay or straight. The pain she is feeling is twofold: not knowing if this person is gay or straight; and if she is gay, then not knowing if the love is mutual.

As musiclover26 points out, "nowhere to go" could refer to the general lack of things to do of small town life, but I think it is much more... in small towns everyone knows each other, there is likely a greater need to remain in the closet.

And yes... it's a great song.

This is one of my favorite of Melissa's. It's so simple but powerful. You can tell all she wants to do is just spend time with someone...doesn't matter where or what they are doing...just being together is enough. That's love...finding happiness in just being.

I would imagine that if you're from a small town or a "nowhere" kind of place you can especially relate to having "nowhere to go". I've felt like that plenty of times and I'm from a big city...
