Dancing With Tears In My Eyes Lyrics
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Weeping for the memory of a life gone by
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Living out a memory of a love that died
It's five and I'm driving home again
It's hard to believe that it's my last time
The man on the wireless cries again
It's over, it's over
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Weeping for the memory of a life gone by
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Living out a memory of a love that died
It's late and I'm with my love alone
We drink to forget the coming storm
We love to the sound of our favourite song
Over and over
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Weeping for the memory of a life gone by
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Living out a memory of a love that died
It's time and we're in each other's arms
It's time but I don't think we really care
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Weeping for the memory of a life gone by
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Living out a memory of a love that died
Dancing with tears in my eyes
Weeping for the memory of a life gone by

The song is not about nuclear holocaust. It's about emotions, human relations and life itself. Only when death approaches do humans realize what they have been missing and the beauty of life. I like how the people in the video use their last time to be together instead of pointlessly freaking out. So the song teaches us to life our life, show our true emotions to other people and cherish what we have. Peace !
@doctorbeat Midge did an interview in 2016 where he specifically explained that it was about what people's reaction to impending doom from a nuclear war would be. He took great inspiration from David Bowie's song Five Years.

The video for this song showed an impending nuclear attack - the end of life on Earth - and the first verse (after the opening chorus) seems to reflect this. When the end is nigh, what can you do but dance?
Actually, it was a Chernobyl-type melt-down. The video was indeed powerful, though. In that case, that's all you can do is dance.

I personally think it is an incredibly beautiful and saddening song...And actually alot better than most of the things out today (especially emo...at least Midge doesn't whine...)
Sad song about love and nuclear holocaust. Not a bad song, from the last good album Ultravox did.
Watch the music video. It's about nuclear war ending the world, and he spends his last night with his wife and child. If you watch the video and listen to the lyrics, there really isn't room for any other interpretation. This is one of the easier songs to interpret. It cracks me up how people try to interpret a song without even watching the video.
Midge Ure states in his autobio - If I Was - that 'Dancing' was about a nuclear disaster and that's why they made the video for it that they did because they wanted it to be an extension of the song and not just of them dancing about.
a guy that is thinking about a recently lost love and remembers all the good and the bad times. sad, but still there is some hope in it. dancing the pain away..
Sorry about that...Realized I was being irresponsible in criticizing you...To each his own...I don't know, I can't detect tinniness in it, though...I guess I've listened to too much 80's lol...
Sorry folks, it's not about nuclear attack, if you look at the video, the guy works in a nuclear plant which has overloaded. So it's like a kind of Chernobyl situation, 2 years before Chernobyl happened....which is spooky!
...or scream.
