Sanctify Yourself Lyrics

Is this the age of the thunder and rage
Can you feel the ground move 'round your feet
If you take one step closer, it'll lead to another
The crossroad above is where we meet
I shout out for shelter, I need you for something
The whole world is out, they're all on the street
Control yourself, love is all you need
Control yourself, in your eyes
Sanctify yourself, sanctify
Be apart of me, sanctify
Sanctify yourself, sanctify
Sanctify yourself, set yourself free

In pictures of living, in bloodshot a vision
Sweet miracles and strange circumstances
I see the sun up, the showdown, the cool winds that blow down
On the big beat that life-long romance is
You've got a gun in your hand, you're making self plans
Stay with me all through the night
Control yourself, love is all you need
Control yourself, open up your heart
Sanctify yourself, sanctify
Be apart of me, sanctify
Sanctify yourself, sanctify
Sanctify yourself, set yourself free

You can't stop the world for a boy or a girl
Sweet victims of poor circumstances
But you can pour back the love, sweeping down from above
Giving hope and making more chances
Well, I hope and I pray that maybe someday
You'll come back down here and show me the way
Control yourself, love is all you need
Control yourself, open up your heart
Open up your heart
Sanctify yourself, sanctify
Sanctify yourself, sanctify
Sanctify yourself, set yourself free

SM may not be "Christian" (practicing)per se. But there is no DOUBT about what this song means. I know the "modern" world doesn't need God the Father,Jesus the Son or the Holy Spirit, but I DO. God bless...

It's one of my favourite Simple Minds songs also. I recently discovered a bag. Inside the bag was a glittering prize. Well, 2 actually. The first was the "Live In The City Of Light" album. The other was the "Once Upon A Time" album.

I hadn't played the latter since i was a schoolboy. Listening to it, was like being back at school for a brief second or two. My adult life still ahead of me. Expectancy of a good life.

For that brief moment, everything was good.

I had forgotten how wonderful these songs are.

I didn't realise they were so into Christianity though. I expect they all met each other at the church bring and buy sale.

I always assumed that the songs message was love yourself and others and you and everyone will be ok.

This song absolutely carries a Christian message. There are the obvious examples such as “praying to Christ that one day He will come back (meaning He has been here before) down here and show us the way”. But the one I want to point to is when the singer tells the person who has planned his/her suicide that this is not the answer. There is Hope!

My Interpretation

@Susan: This is my favorite of their songs, too. @panamaniak: OK, smartypants, what's the "obvious" meaning? Are they simply saying that everyone should have some kind of faith?

@panamaniak: I didn't mean for that to sound as rude as it might on the internet. It should be a friendly question, with a smile after "smartypants" :D

The more serious question: So does it mean that everyone should have some kind of faith? Should people cleanse themselves of their wrongs? Or does it mean that people should cleanse themselves by confessing (like Catholics do)?

Lol! That's okay! And I know this reply is late but I am rarely on here. To answer your question: Personally I am a Christian and believe in the God of the Bible. But I don't force what I belive on others and I don't "condemn" others if they don't share in what I believe. Now should everyone have some kind of faith? That's a tricky question. Because if you look at it like this some people say they don't believe in anything or have "faith" in anything. That unto itself is a "circle without end" if you will, lol! A...
