lookin' for to save my save my soul
lookin' in the places where no flowers grow
lookin' for to fill that GOD shaped hole
mother mother sucking rock and roll
(been around the back... been around the front)
holy dunc, spacejunk comin' in for the splash
white dopes on punk starking into the flash
lookin' for baby Jesus under the trash
mother mother suckin' rock and roll
mother (<i>scat singing</i>) rock and roll
mother am I still your son, you know I've waited so long to hear you say no
mother you left and made me someone
now I'm still a child but no one tells me no
lookin' for a sound that's gonna drown out the world
lookin' for the father of my two little girls
got the swing got the sway got my straw in lemonade
still looking for the face I had before the world was made
mother mother sucking rock and roll
bubble poppin' sugar droppin' rock and roll
(<i>scat singing</i>)
woo me sister
move me brother
soothe me mother
rule me father
show me mother
lookin' in the places where no flowers grow
lookin' for to fill that GOD shaped hole
white dopes on punk starking into the flash
lookin' for baby Jesus under the trash
mother (<i>scat singing</i>) rock and roll
mother you left and made me someone
now I'm still a child but no one tells me no
lookin' for the father of my two little girls
got the swing got the sway got my straw in lemonade
still looking for the face I had before the world was made
bubble poppin' sugar droppin' rock and roll
(<i>scat singing</i>)
move me brother
soothe me mother
rule me father
show me mother

Bono has also said that this song describes his life better than any other song.
I lost my mom when I was little and had a hard time trying to find my self after that. This is one of my favorite U2 song because I talks about loss and how no matter what are lives are like we fonten try to fill our hearts with stuff when what we need is God. Not even beeing with my mom again would fill the hole that holy God could fill.
Seems to be saying that when Bono's mom died, he looked to find meaning in other things, Rock and Roll being one of them. He clung to the rock and roll lifestyle like a child clings to a mother. He also laments the loss of his mother's guiding influence - that he's trying all these types of music out, all these lyrics, all these images, and waiting for someone to tell him he's wrong. He feels like a child stumbling about, without anyone to slap his hand and tell him 'no'. This is far from the cocky, self-assured Bono most fans see. Also, more than any album U2 has made, POP is about doubt. It's one of the reasons a lot of fans didn't like the album - they listen to U2 for hope and faith, not doubt. And 'looking for to fill that God-shaped hole' is not only a quote (from Rushdie, anyone?), but a testament to the questions he's had about his faith.
That quote is from French philsopher Pascal. I like what you said about the lyrics. I think also, that it's about trying to find God (often in the wrong places) - "looking for baby Jesus under the trash", "Looking in the places where no flowers grow".

About Bono wanting to reconcile with his mother...a great concert opener for Popmart.
This is a good song! But it's not really U2's style. I might expect it from the Chemical Brothers or something. Oh well, it's a great song. I believe its about how being famous has changed him and he's wondering whether or not his Mother would recognize him today.
Bono´s mother died 2 or 3 years before U2 was created. It´s the baddest trouble in Bono´s life... He made I Will Follow to his mother...
As we all might know, he is catholic and he has been searching for something, I guess it´s God or redemption... That´s why he made I Still Haven´t Found What Im Looking For...
MOFO is about both: god and his mother... He lost his mother and he still haven´t found God... So he lost himself.
Great song.
This song is so groovy. I think it has a good beat, but it is too bouncy to be taken as a serious song. I think that Bono was just stringing pop phrases like kool and the gang says "sophisticated momma". however, I could be wrong, since these comments are connected with bono's biographical facts.
Hey does any one know what the scat singing says??? I really want to know what it says, for ugh...personal use.
This song was amazing live......check out the popmart live in Mexico city video, its one of the best set openers they ever did!
