Baker Baker Lyrics
Baker Baker baking a cake
make me a day
make me whole again
and I wonder what's in a day
what's in your cake this time
I guess you heard he's gone to L.A.
he says that behind my eyes I'm hiding
and he tells me I pushed him away
that my heart's been hard to find
here
there must be something here
there must be something here
here
Baker Baker can you explain
if truly his heart was made of icing
and I wonder how mine would taste
maybe we could change his mind
I know you're late for your next parade
you came to make sure that I'm not running
well I ran from him in all kinds of ways
guess it was his turn this time
time
thought I'd make friends with time
thought we'd be flying
maybe not this time
Baker Baker baking a cake
make me a day
make me whole again
and I wonder if he's ok
if you see him say hi
make me a day
make me whole again
and I wonder what's in a day
what's in your cake this time
he says that behind my eyes I'm hiding
and he tells me I pushed him away
that my heart's been hard to find
there must be something here
there must be something here
here
if truly his heart was made of icing
and I wonder how mine would taste
maybe we could change his mind
you came to make sure that I'm not running
well I ran from him in all kinds of ways
guess it was his turn this time
thought I'd make friends with time
thought we'd be flying
maybe not this time
make me a day
make me whole again
and I wonder if he's ok
if you see him say hi

"Baker Baker is kind of tragic in a way, because -- I've had to look at how I treated men, and on this record, I think with Baker Baker, to deal with a man that truly loved me, but that I wasn't emotionally available for. You know how women always say men aren't emotionally available. Well, a lot of women aren't emotionally available. It's like, if you're vulnerable, we say, 'Look, we need you to be sensitive.' So you become sensitive, and yet we go, 'You've got no f***in' backbone,' and we kick you in the face and run off with a ski trainer." [Tori Amos, The Baltimore Sun, '94]
I love the fact that this song is a kind of prayer. Baker Baker referring to her concept of God or whatever. A prayer to acknowledge her acceptance that it is over, accepting the part she played and her inability to love at the time. Story of my life.
I love the line about making friends with time, like the feeling would pass, and yet she has to admit that she is still not over it. 'time is not a healer, time is no friend of mine'. Lyric from my own song.
It is a beautiful song. She couldn't return his feelings "I ran from him in all kinds of ways...guess it was his turn this time." She stayed hoping in time, she'd grow to return the love, but in reality, he wised up and she misses what could have been, had it been meant to be.
.....for me..this song its about..rejecting someone who didnt deserved it..and someone whos so much better than what he seems..its about someone who helped her..and made her believe again..yet she wasnt able to be with him..the way he wanted..but she knows who much he's worth...she cant be with him...but she wishes she could.. we all get the same situation..at least once in a lifetime.. pushin away all the good things..just cuz we cant handle something so amezin its almost unreal..and the fear of losing that later in the road..makes us push them away, run away..and create emotional walls.. it sucks i know=/
I think this song illustrates absentedmindedness if that is a word. Like when you are having relationship problems and you're at work and you just have to push them back into the boundaries of your mind. But those type of thoughts will never cease. They always creep back in and I think that's what this song is about. Baker, baker baking a cake. Make me whole again.
She misses him so much, it's like a part of her has been taken away. She knows he's not coming back, and that makes her situation all the more heartrending. She wonders how he's doing ("and I wonder if he's okay/if you see him say hi"). She can't believe that he doesn't feel anything. Just the tone in which this song is sung tells you volumes.
A beautiful song. Simply put.
this song is so beautiful its one of my favorites...i interpret it as a song from a woman with emotional problems, trying to find herself, etc, and who's just been left in a relationship, and the baker baker is a good guy friend, generally a stronger person, who's kind of always been there for her to look after her ("i know you're late for your next parade, you came to make sure that i'm not running") and take care of her, who she runs to to lean on. a very heartbreaking song.
Beautiful, this has always been my favorite Tori song, I saw her sing it live and it was amazing, even my boyfriend who is not too into Tori was amazed at the emotion that comes out of this song... it's just stunning.
@CuteOrSomething This is the most beautiful song I ever heard.I found Tori years ago when "Pink" came out. I was making a recording for my 3rd grade daughter's class, that would reflect things about the students, and their family.Professionally, I have been a baker all my life, so I saw the c/d in a library and said "well, this is a perfect song to represent myself. Then Listened to the whole c/d...and my fascination and closeness with this amazing woman,I became an immediate fan, have followed all her work since and before "Pink", loving Pele and Choir-girl and all her work My Being a devotee is probably a bit out of the ordinary profile of a Tori fan, I've sen her several times in the NY area, and I'm usually the only 65 yr. old straight (sort of) man. Even before I read up on her I could identify with some of the more painful songs, and having been molested as a child myself. Love her for the work she's done with RAINN. Best concert I ever went to (and, as a child of the 60's I saw all the greats....the Dead, Janis Joplin, Hendrix, Simon and Garfunkel (which was my first favorite before Tori) Rod Stewart, Van Morrison etc. and the best was at Jones Beach here on LonG Island....Alanis Morisette and Tori, It was kick ass. My wife is one of those corporate types, and she couldn't stand the show. I knew at that moment the marriage would never last (lol, sort of).Does anybody know if Tori is touring in 2019? I can't find anything on line. If you know something, please post it here or email me at efbake7@aol.com. Last thought: When she talks about "running" I always have this image of my self finishing a cake....there's an art to making sure that your icing is not running...especially hard to do in the hot humid NY summers.
I think the baker person is her psychiatrist or something. Someone who helps her with dealing with her pain and her personal development during there sessions (and I wonder what's in a day what's in your cake this time).
