Let's All Go Down the Strand Lyrics

One night, half a dozen tourists met together in Trafalgar Square
A fourth nights tour on the continent was planned
And each had his portmento in his hand
Down the Rhine they meant to have a picnic to Joan said I must decline
The boys are being advised by me
Stay away from Germany
What's the good of going down the Rhine

Let's all go down the strand
Let's all go down the strand
I'll be leader, you can march behind
Come with me and see what you can find
Let's all go down the strand
Oh what a happy land
That's the place for fun and noise
All amoung the girls and boys
So let's all go down the strand

One day 5 and 20 convicts
Satted by their 20 little cells
The bell then sounded ding-a-ding-a-dong
To exercise the prisoners came along
Buggler Ben exclaimed to Jacks The Warden
To me sir, It's very strange
The men are tired of going round
Round and round the same old ground
I propose we make a little change

Let's all go down the strand
Let's all go down the strand
I'll be leader, you can march behind
Come with me and see what you can find
Let's all go down the strand
Oh what a happy land
That's the place for fun and noise
All amoung the girls and boys
So let's all go down the strand

Gray crowds gathered round to welcome
Shackleton returning from the poll
The Lord Mayor welcomed all the galant crew
And said my lads, I've got a treat for you
Come with me, The mansion house awaits you
A banquet shall be supplied
But a towering, grumbling mood
Said we don't want any food
Then he turned to Shackleton and sighed

Let's all go down the strand
Let's all go down the strand
I'll be leader, You can march behind
Come with me and see what you can find
Let's all go down the strand
Oh what a happy land
That's the place for fun and noise
All amoung the girls and boys
So let's all go down the strand

Let's all go down the strand
Let's all go down the strand
I'll be leader, You can march behind
Come with me and see what you can find
Let's all go down the strand
Oh what a happy land
That's the place for fun and noise
All amoung the girls and boys
So let's all go down the strand

This is a traditional British song, so I guess the intended meaning of Blur performing it was to emphasise their Britishness.

I would like to offer some corrections to the lyrics: 1."The Strand" has capital letters as it is a street name in London

  1. "Fourth nights" should be fortnight's(two weeks) 3.Portmanteau is a French word for a carrying case and is not spelt "portmento".
  2. "Till Jones said "I must decline", not "to Joan..." 5.You boys have been advised by me, not "are being" 6.Among, not "amoung" 7.Sat in five and twenty little cells, not "Satted by their ....." 8.Burglar Ben not "Buggler Ben" (or even Bugger Ben!) 9 Grey not "Gray", it's an English song! May mean grey suited? Personally I think "great" crowds would sound more appropriate. 10.Shackleton returned from the (South)Pole not the poll. He was an antarctic explorer not a politician! 11.Gallant has two "l"s, it's an English song! 12.Mansion House should have capital letters. It's where the Lord Mayor of London lives. 13.Question mark needed after "Rhine" at end of first verse.

Hope this is helpful

My Interpretation

Also further corrections:

start="14">

  • A "Tar"(Sailor, one of the crew) in grumbling mood, not a "towering" grumbling mood
  • Jaggs the warden not "Jacks"(minor quibble!)
  • The sheet music of this Harry Castling song published by Francis, Day and Hunter(London) for the singer Charles Whittle does have "Great" crowds rather than "grey" crowds I am relieved to know.

    Also,

"Boys , you be advised by me" appears to be the original version which is in a better tense than "you have been...". "Boys you are advised by me" also sounds good.
