not to disagree, i can see what you me, Delomo, but I feel makeartnotmath might be on the right track. songs can mean whatever to different people, esp. nick drake's music. but i feel that he is trying to make a statement about life in general. he might me talking to those around him in this world, or maybe even life itself. maybe life, as an enity, chooses who it will dance for and make shine, or who it will take(death). if it won't take him, well, who do you love? b/c he, nick, is looking for some direction.....my best efforts at this song, tell me what you think....
This is a song Nick is singing to a girl he loves but has rejected him. Nick is not bitter, he is just melancholic and reflective in the way he poses her the question who will she choose as the love of her life? However, it can also be applied to the listener in general, as Nick asks us, who will we love forever? A question that is extremely hard to answer, but when found, the key to true happiness.
Of course I can't be 100%, since I've never been able to pick his brains, (beyond his songs anyway) but this definitely seems like it's about the various gods/religions you can choose from.

I'm not sure if he started questioning his faith (which is possible when you consider he had some sort of clinical depression) or just found it strange that so many cultures have different beliefs. But I definitely think that's what it's about.
i feel he is speaking of a girl that perhaps has rejected him, i feel like he's given up in this song, at least given up on the girl, and now he is wondering where she will take her life.
To me, it means many things. I dont think a definitive meaning should be assigned, either. To me it speaks of the 1) Girl lost. (Significant other if you will) 2) Writing about his parents. 3) Society, and or anyone else you'd like to apply this to. I feel there is a nice disconnect here.
Life is all about making choices. Asking which you choose, is asking who are you, what are your conscience choices?
I tend to hear the song as being narrated by a sort of muse, who asks Nick (or the listener) what the direction of his life will be.
The star as a metaphor brings navigation to mind. And "which will you answer, which will you call" makes me think less of romantic love (although it still could be that, and the ambiguity is something I like about the song) and more about devotion to a cause.
Music can be a hard road -- you choose it knowing that things won't be comfortable, and most likely it won't pan out. I can imagine Nick's muse saying, almost sarcastically, "which (path) will you take if you won't take me?" And Nick recounts it to us with a kind of resignation -- he can't just live, he has to choose something to live in service of.
