Destination

I seem to think the song is about the pressure of being on tour resulting in divorce. Peter Koppes was having marital problems which resulted in divorce around the timeframe of this recording. I feel the term destination is a double entendre meaning single(the end result of divorce) or literally cities while on tour. I won't try to interpret every line, however there are very specific lines that I feel give credence to my thoughts. In the space between our houses, some bones have been discovered, our procession lurches on as if we have recovered.... (The desolation of divorce and the pressure of having a band where "the show must go on" can't really stop making an album or touring despite personal conflict) Your little envelope just makes me cold, makes destination start to unfold.... (receiving divorce papers in the mail, being single is imminent) Our documents are useless, or forged beyond believing, page forty-seven is unsigned, I need it by this evening... (People who want to stall the inevitable will screw with divorce papers or not sign them all. Many movies have used this, where the wife is hounding the husband to sign the papers or vise versa.) In the space between our cities, a storm is slowly forming, something eating up our days, I feel it every morning. Destination (The feeling of gloom, like a storm brewing between Autrailia and L.A. where The Church had moved to recently, and having that sinking feeling every morning that you will soon be single) Distance and speed have left us too weak, and destination looks kind of bleak... (Being away from home and touring all the time takes it's toll and you have no energy to fight the divorce anymore, but still the thought of being single seems terrible even though you are no longer fighting the process) In the space between our bodies, the air has grown small fingers, with one caress your powerless, like all those clapped-out swinger. Destination (This can be one of two things, the realization that once you are single you can start sleeping around whenever the urge strikes you [carress and fingers representing temptation] or that acting on temptation has caused the divorce to begin with) * Although this is my own interpretation I feel that it's a much needed interpretation compared to what else has been given here, although the other interpretations are wildly inventive and fascinating in their own way.
