Planet Claire Lyrics
Ahhhahhahhahh
She came from Planet Claire
I knew she came from there
She drove a Plymouth Satellite
Faster than the speed of light
Planet Claire has pink air
All the trees are red
No one ever dies there
No one has a head
Ahhhahhhahhahh
Some say she's from Mars
Or one of the seven stars
That shine after 3:30 in the morning
WELL SHE ISN'T
Ahhhahhhahhahhahhahh
I knew she came from there
She drove a Plymouth Satellite
Faster than the speed of light
All the trees are red
No one ever dies there
No one has a head
Or one of the seven stars
That shine after 3:30 in the morning
WELL SHE ISN'T

my aunt (whos name happens to be claire) went to college with Kate Pierson and they were roommates for a short time and i always hoped that this song was about her but idk probably not lol
I love the "Some say she's from Mars..." verse. Alone, that verse could be about finding or knowing someone who is really different, and perhaps not accepted by the community, but you/he likes her anyway for that reason. She isn't an Martian! She came from and lives in her own world! The long instrumental intro is great too :)
the long build-up adds to the camp sci-fi atmosphere. but more importantly it's a reflection of a band justifiably noted for their sense of humor.

it seems to take forever for the song (the 1st song on their 1st LP) to get started. then when the vocals finally come in, they finish almost before you notice they've begun!

adding to this effect, the lyrics don't say much. like the first couplet, a model of redundancy:

I'm reminded of an apartment building in my neighborhood called "Debbie Manor". because most apartments have names which are pretentious, as if you're supposed to be reminded of villas on the French Riviera. (the more cheap and rundown the place, the more pseudo-luxurious the name.) so, Debbie. ridiculously simple.
@robmosz I think that's exactly what this song is about: about a girl named Claire

I understand as: You can call her crazy as much as you want, but she has a mind of her own and she doesn't take s#it from anyone.

Could be they used it because the name has a spacey sound to it. Or it could be that the girl Claire really drove a Plymouth Satellite and perhaps this inspired the lyrics in the first place... :-)
@robmosz She doesn't take shit from the laws of physics either! And the guitar licks are awsome.

It was played frequently when I was at University way back when - think to this day it is one of the great songs of the last thirty years. The opening with the singing mimicking the keyboard is simply brilliant and the guitar on the whole album is just a great and unique sound, I gather played with four strings. Will always be a favourite.
I love this song. It's one of my hairbrush kareoke ones. xP
The problem with interpre... er... The problem with trying to say what a B-52 song means is that they're so strangely awesome and nonsensical that it's sometimes hard to see anything serious behind it. xP
For instance, this song could be about someone from another country and how people can treat them very strangely and differently, but I think it is actually about an alien. Like, green skin, antennae, that kind.
Great band, gotta love 'em. xP
Okay Okay, anima85...we belive you, she is an odd duck ( and I prolly dated her at one point given your description) I agree with the original assesment. the B-52's have their own sort of genius that I'd call anti-genius.
Said and done its a fun song, and really that all there is to it.
anyone who only knows of this band through 'love shack' should be forced to listen to their debut album. great stuff
This is a great song. If you like "Rock Lobster" or "Private Idaho", you'll like it. If you are more of a "Love shacK" person than it might not be for you. I personally like the older stuff much better than the newer stuff.
