At the time the lyric was viewed as Rossiter's statement about his (homo/bi)sexuality "I am coming out today", "Its hard to be left-handed, but smile you're not the only one". Given that Rossiter later went on to get married to a woman .....
Rossiter has said in an interview(s) that he is bi-sexual so marrying a woman is something he could still do...
Left-handed people were forced to learn to use their right hand so maybe he's using the term to cover all the things people consider to be unfit? Homosexuality being only one of them.

At the time Isle of Man was the only place where homosexuality was illegal, and being Left Handed was a codeword for being queer, sinister, different. So yeah I always read this (as a gay man, coming out when this album was released) as being about his bisexuality, and homosexuality in general. It's a personal anthem of mine, like Standing In The Way of Control.
