Summer in the City Lyrics
Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
Cool town, evening in the city
Dressing so fine and looking so pretty
Cool cat, looking for a kitty
Gonna look in every corner of the city
Till I'm wheezing like a bus stop
Running up the stairs, gonna meet you on the rooftop
But at night it's a different world
Go out and find a girl
Come-on come-on and dance all night
Despite the heat it'll be alright
And babe, don't you know it's a pity
That the days can't be like the nights
In the summer, in the city
In the summer, in the city
instrumental break
Hot town, summer in the city
Back of my neck getting dirty and gritty
Been down, isn't it a pity
Doesn't seem to be a shadow in the city
All around, people looking half dead
Walking on the sidewalk, hotter than a match head

This song is very Hot
One of my favorite old songs.
awesome song!
What city are they talking about? NYC???
Probably Houston, the summers are pretty intense.
@Allison~!@ Craig would have to be right. The Spoonful were from there and you can kind of tell especially with the "Running upstairs gonna meet you on the rooftop" since many NYC apartments have them.

the song is about NYC written by john sebastian's younger brother mark and his first full summer there.
I find it amazing how much this song sounds like modern indie and some pop rock.
Pretty clear to me what this song's about. I love it, it's incredibly catchy and always gets stuck in my head.
I think this song is about the city being really hot and everyone being too hot to do anything, but when night comes the city is cooler and everyone is partying and having a good time because it's summer.
The last commenter is probably right.
But the funny thing about it is the especially with The Spoonful being from NYC and the fact it gets cold and snowy there in the winter, I'd be outside taking in the heat instead of the cold.
