China Roses Lyrics
Who can tell me if we have heaven,
Who can say the way it should be;
Moonlight holly, the Sappho Comet,
Angel's tears below a tree.
You talk of the break of morning
As you view the new aurora,
Cloud in crimson, the key of heaven,
One love carved in acajou.
One told me of China Roses,
One a thousand nights and one night,
Earth's last picture, the end of evening
Hue of indigo and blue.
A new moon leads me to
Woods of dreams and I follow.
A new world waits for me;
My dream, my way.
I know that if I have heaven
There is nothing to desire.
Rain and river, a world of wonder
May be paradise to me.
I see the sun.
I see the stars.
Who can say the way it should be;
Moonlight holly, the Sappho Comet,
Angel's tears below a tree.
As you view the new aurora,
Cloud in crimson, the key of heaven,
One love carved in acajou.
One a thousand nights and one night,
Earth's last picture, the end of evening
Hue of indigo and blue.
Woods of dreams and I follow.
A new world waits for me;
My dream, my way.
There is nothing to desire.
Rain and river, a world of wonder
May be paradise to me.
I see the stars.

China roses are actually lillies. :)
Does anyone else perceive this song to be about opium and its effects on the human psyche?
Enya created a style whose wide open soundscapes were reminiscent of New Age, but more melodic, heavily based on the traditional Celtic music. This song is very metaphoric. China roses is saying that happiness and an understanding of life is all that matters. Good song, it expresses one's personal feelings. "I know that if I have heaven There is nothing to desire. Rain and river, a world of wonder May be paradise to me."
I think this song is far from about the effects of opium. Instead, I think it is about how everyone has a different idea of what heaven is, or what the greatest thing is. If you went around asking what people thought the passage to heaven was, you'd get so many different answers. Someone might say 'space' and another might say 'under a tree.'
But, when it comes down to it, you don't have to ask what /other/ people think, because you should think of your owm heaven. Your own paradise. The place you love most of all. I think that:
"I know that if I have heaven there is nothing to desire rain and river, a world of wonder may be paradise to me" is some proof of what I said about how all you need to know is your peacefuly place.
And even more, is that if you can get there, to go. "I see the sun/I see the stars" She is saying that the speaker is actually there.
And its an amazing feeling to be able to put yourself in the place you love. So if you know where that place is for you, you should try and spend time there. Even if someone says "whats so great about such-and-such?" What matters is that its where you feel most a peace.
I never really looked much into the lyrics of this song, but it sounds so damn good that I don't really care what it means. Enya has a fantastic voice
When I hear this song, I think of two people in live dancing. Maybe it's a couple on thier wedding day. They're so happy and filled with love for the other that they don't care about the world around them.
"A new moon leads me to Woods of dreams and I fallow; A new world wiats for me; My dream, my way."
BTW: I think that insted of "One told me of China Roses", it's "You told me of China Roses".
This is my favorite Enya song.
It's supposed to to "in love".
