May it be an evening star
Shines down upon you
May it be when darkness falls
Your heart will be true
You walk a lonely road
Oh! How far you are from home

Mornie utulie
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantie
A promise lives within you now

May it be the shadow's call
Will fly away
May it be your journey on
To light the day
When the night is overcome
You may rise to find the sun

Mornie utulie (darkness has come)
Believe and you will find your way
Mornie alantie (darkness has fallen)
A promise lives within you now

A promise lives within you now

Okay im sorry, but if one more christian starts doing a god and harsh times of the christian path comparison i am going to hurl. I am a huge enya fan and I'm sorry but there are so many different ways to praise the song without bringing religion into it. No offense to the Christian religion though.

I haven't seen LoTR, and I don't know if I intend on doing so, but I love this song. I spend a lot of time drawing (not as a living, of course, I'm only 12) and it really inspires me when I listen to this song, because I do a lot of fantasy pictures... I definitely love Enya, and I wish more of my 12 year old friends would stop listening to their pop and rap and try listening to Enya...

This song reminds me of hard times and never giving up and looking for hope. And also discusses personal sacrifice for the better of people around you. Which makes it perfect for Lord of the Rings. Since LOTR is based off dark times and looking towards hope. This song makes me emotional. The video can almost make you cry.

This song is great! It matches perfect with the movie "The lord of the rings: The fellowship of the ring". It had to take the oscar!

The first time that I heard this song I cried so hard... it's so beautiful, and the meaning is clear and true. It can be about so many things, but the way I interpreted it was about being a Christian and how hard it can be. Christians truly do walk a lonely road, and alot of times you can crack under the pressure of this world. But if you just hold on, "you may rise to find the sun," which to me means Jesus. I think that Tolkien would have loved this song, with him being a Christian and all.

This song is the anthem of the beauty that can exist in this world, and in the next. Hope, it last forever, through the test of time. You really can feel every word of the book.

A more accurate way to look at this song would overall be the agon of the elves in The Silmarillion.

The song in the context of the books and movies is indeed religious, but it isn't Christian. The evening star in the first line refers to Varda, the elvish Queen of the Heavens. This is supported by the Quenya in the refrain.

Firstly, I would like to point out songs mean different things to different people, sometimes they are merely for enjoyment, sometimes they are for stress, sometimes we speak through them. The point is , we all will have different opinions and one is not more right than another. My personal interpretation of this song is that it is not a religious one, I feel that it has to do with hope, and the feeling of being surrounded in darkness, and being alone wherever one turns. I feel it represents having faith in the future, and believing that there is a calm after the storm, and that ships will sail in safer waters once the tide has come down. Its a very well composed song, the voice is beautiful, I enjoy this.

Just listening for the 784,654th time....and it's just perfect in every way. Just incredible. The only reason it was remade was to scoop up a boatload of money from a more modern and accepting audience. But it is a completely different song than the other one that sounds slapped together in a few takes without a thought for the meaning. This song captivates me still, after 50+ years. Takes me to the deep South and the poverty of some who lived thru truly hard times. And the powerful spirit of a poor young girl being abandoned to her future with only a red dress and her wits to keep her alive. She not only stayed alive, she turned her hard beginnings around, became self sufficient, successful and someone with respect for herself. She didn't let the naysayers and judgers stop her. She's the one sitting in the drivers seat at the end. So, not a song about a poor girl, but a song of hope and how you can rise up no matter how far down you started. There is a huge difference between a singer who simply belts out a song that is on a page in front of them, and someone who can convey an entire experience with their voice. Telling not just a story with words, but taking you inside it and making you feel like you are there, with their interpretation.

@Kahiara Actually I think the husband passed away, "She sang for you last night She heard you were calling" Many people say they have felt, heard, or seen their loved ones after they have passed. "Don't be scared now Close your eyes She holds guard tonight Go on forward no remorse Life will take it's course" This is said to the late husband by a third part (never named), who encourages him to pass on. Because life will eventually continue. The phrase "holds guard" refers to the ( en.wikipedia.org/wiki/… ) which is a Christian ceremony held after someone dies. Now it is usually held right after the funeral, but in most celtiic countries the wake is held before the funeral. "She danced with you last night so you will remember All you have shared, a lifetime." This sentence feels as if the only thing it wants to convey is their history together, namely, husband and wife. For the rest it just refers back to the first verse.

I believe this is another amazingly on point and nuanced commentary on the insanity that follows emotionally abusive relationships. The abuser has no anxieties, no emotional pain, or salience/memory for that matter, so the survivor appears to be the crazy one, obsessed with the abuse and that buzzword that seems to ignite arguments about diagnosing people without a degree, etc. funny how you say the words domestic violence, abuse, abuse survivor and boom the subject changes. Anyways, I especially relate to her midnights becoming afternoons, complex PTSD often leads to this phenomenon, whether due to purposeful sleep deprivation by the abuser, or just hyper vigilance associated with the PTSD, along with the fear of facing people, especially your loved ones, who Never actually understand, even if they try, because all they see is you, on fire, screaming about the arsonist that no one ever sees, and who has been spreading lies about your alleged mental instability, deceptive personality, etc. the whole time. While the last thing survivors need is more blame, our society supports a narrative that blames the objectively innocent party because the blatantly guilty party has spent their entire lives fabricating a persona and we’re just being human, and human psychology is quite counterintuitive especially in the context of trauma. Look at Amber Heard. Vilified and not believed, regardless of what any abuse survivor could recognize as a fellow survivor instantly. But Johnny depp is a malignant narcissist, a man, and wealthy as all get out. It’s sick.

The man has pseudo-friends who constantly criticize his actions. They moralize him, "teach" him and advise him to make a significant change in his life, because the way he is and what he does is not what they say it should be. They may find his life lame or immoral. They hold themselves up as role models. The man replies that he will make his own choices and decisions and he does not agree to unconditionally make himself under the influence of questionable quality advice. He justifies this by saying that there is always someone for whom he will be important, no matter what he does and no matter what he is. Although it is not said directly, I read it as meaning that he will always be important to himself in every way and he will always have his own support. "Everyone is different and maybe that's a good thing, but you exceeded that mark 1000 times" - I remember very well how sad the words I once heard (from my peers and it was in negative context) at school made me feel.
