South City Midnight Lady Lyrics
Up all night I could not sleep
The whiskey that I drank was cheap
With shakin' hands I went and I lit up my last cigarette
Well the sun came, night had fled
And sleepy eyed I reached my bed
I saw you sleepy dreamin' there all covered and warm
South City midnight lady
I'm much obliged indeed
You sure have saved this man whose soul was in need
I thought there was no reason
For all these things I do
But the smile that sent out returned with you
When day has left the night behind
And shadows roll across my mind
I sometimes find myself alone out walkin' the street
Yes, and when I'm feelin' down and blue
Then all I do is think of you
And all my foolish problems seem to fade away
South City midnight lady
I'm much obliged indeed
You sure have saved this man whose soul was in need
I thought there was no reason
For all these things I do
But the smile that sent out returned with you
The whiskey that I drank was cheap
With shakin' hands I went and I lit up my last cigarette
Well the sun came, night had fled
And sleepy eyed I reached my bed
I saw you sleepy dreamin' there all covered and warm
South City midnight lady
I'm much obliged indeed
You sure have saved this man whose soul was in need
I thought there was no reason
For all these things I do
But the smile that sent out returned with you
And shadows roll across my mind
I sometimes find myself alone out walkin' the street
Yes, and when I'm feelin' down and blue
Then all I do is think of you
And all my foolish problems seem to fade away
I'm much obliged indeed

first to comment. hard to imagine, but nowadays it's all about c-rap and hip hop and all that music.
I believe this is one of their most beautiful songs.
@MookieBomber There's nothing wrong with rap. Check out "Run the Jewels" or "Public Enemy." It's not rock and roll, or soul, it's it's own thing. You can enjoy the sublime music of The Doobies AND like rap

I know thats what I think also but there isn't much to do to get that shit off the radio mainly because all the dumbass listeners out there that think it's actual music what a joke the rap scene is. btw this song and band are amazing!
South City is South Lake Tahoe. He worked 6 pm to 2 Am, she worked 4 Pm to midnight. She was off by midnight and by the time he got home she was asleep. Thus SOuth City Midnight Lady.

I think a man is depressed and can't sleep at night but he comes home and his outlook on life is restored when he looks at his lady sleeping.
"Yes, and when I'm feelin' down and blue Then all I do is think of you And all my foolish problems seem to fade away". Beautiful song.
Has it occured to any of you that that the "midnight lady" is a prostitute?
This is a song about depression, alcoholism, and some drunk feeling better about himself because he's not as low as the "midnight lady."
Also, it really sucks that I have to use Internet Exploder to post on this site, because the "add your comments" box won't appear in Firefox. Jeez, songmeanings.net, get your coding up to standards so that a correct browser can render all of it.

I'm not sold on "midnight lady" meaning she's a CSW. She could have been a woman he met at a bar (drinking cheap whisky) and they went back to his place. He's got the shakes (it's obviously he's an alcoholic) and he can't sleep. So he smokes a cigarette and really likes the girl he met at the bar.
