It makes me lonely
It makes me very lonely
When I see you here
Waiting on
Oh
He makes me tired
He makes me very tired
And inside of me
Lingers on

But you have your heart, oh
Don't believe it
And you run outside
Waiting on
Everything I said, oh
Well, I meant it
And inside my head
Holdin' on

'Cause if I died tonight
Would you hold my hand? Oh
Would you understand?
And if I lied in spite
Would you still be here? No
Would you disappear?

Surely must be you
Surely must be you
But I don't make you lonely
Ah
I'll get over you
I'll get over you
But I don't make you lonely
Ah

La-la-da-da
La-la-da-da
La-la-da-da
Ah
La-la-da-da
La-la-da-da
La-la-da-da
Ah
La-la-da-da
La-la-da-da

I think it is saying that the guy told her they could not be together, that he felt so alone, even when she was around. And this is her way of saying, you felt lonely because you will not let yourself get close to anyone, not because of me. It is just easier to blame her than realize the problem starts with himself.

"...Surely must be you But I don't make you lonely I'll get over you But I don't make you lonely..." These have to be the saddest words ever spoken. Reminds me of getting broke up with and thinking he was the one, but he isn't even thinking about me, you know. This song has to be one of my favorites.

i think basically this song is saying how her lover left her and made her so lonely and at the end she says that she'll get over him but she's not gonna make him lonely like he did.

I'm not sure exactly but I think she's in love with him and she knows he has feeling for her but she dont think he's sure of himself. She wants him to prove his true feelings for her.."'Cos if I died tonight Would you hold my hand, no Would you understand And if I lived in spite Would you still be there, no Would you disappear"

Would you love me in enough to be there for me no matter what happens or would you just leave me? Anyway that's what I think...Cranberries are a good band..I love the way she sings

this song is about how she loves someone who loves someone else. she feels so alone but he doesn't because he's in love with someone else and shes just asking him questions when she already knows the answers

I love how this song starts out as a kind of simple, sad reflection on things, but the during the "'cause if I died..." verse the music suddenly gets angrier...and as the verse ends the music goes back to normal...

Allright, pals, i agree with everyone in certain bits, that she loves one impossible, that she's just in love but not reciprocated, that she is in love with a jackass, but the only thing i just can't get until now is... what the,,, did she said that gives this song its name?

Note that anyone has spoken about this mere detail... and that's the reason i've search and found this page. I would be very pleased and grateful if you were so kind to tell me...

why this pretty beautiful song is called like this? what does it mean? and what matters the most: what did she said? that she meant it.

So this has been.my favorite song of OTEP's since it came out in 2004, and I always thought it was a song about a child's narrative of suffering in an abusive Christian home. But now that I am revisiting the lyrics, I am seeing something totally new. This song could be gospel of John but from the perspective of Jesus. Jesus was NOT having a good time up to and during the crucifixion. Everyone in the known world at the time looked to him with fear, admiration or disgust and he was constantly being asked questions. He spoke in "verses, prophesies and curses". He had made an enemy of the state, and believed the world was increasingly wicked and fallen from grace, or that he was in the "mouth of madness". The spine of atlas is the structure that allows the titan to hold the world up. Jesus challenged the state and in doing so became a celebrated resistance figure. It also made him public enemy #1. All of this happened simply because he was doing his thing, not because of any agenda he had or strategy. And then he gets scourged (storm of thorns) There are some plot holes here but I think it's an interesting interpretation.

Warren wanted a Beach Boys thing for this one, and Carl Wilson and Billy Hinsche came in, with Carl arranging the vocal parts. The other harmony vocalists (credited as the "Gentlemen Boys") were Jackson Browne, J.D. Souther, Zevon's longtime backers Waddy Wachtel and Jorge Calderon, and Linda Rondstadt/Stone Poneys guitarist Kenny Edwards.

He reuses the verse melody from the previous album's "Dirty Little Religion", the topics of the verses are all over the place, and he packs too many words into one line (goes to show...) and too few in another (it's pretty hard to find), and rhymes "Henley Regatta" with "Persona non grata", but gets away with it all as only he could.

Like a lot of the other comments are saying, I think this mainly about voyeurism. If the song was about his girlfriend, then why would he use the word spy. If you are a spy it means you shouldn't be caught, that is kind of the whole point, and if you are a voyeur, the whole point of the pleasure you get from it, is the fact that the other people don't know you are watching them. See a bit of a connection there?
