I Am Not Your Broom Lyrics
Now broom you must now sweep for me the dust it fills my room
No John I will not sweep for you for I am not your broom
What nonsense are you speaking broom my words you must obey
Another life awaits be and I'm leaving you today
I am not your broom
I am not your broom
I've had enough I'm throwing off my chains of servitude
I am not your broom
I am not your broom
No longer must I sweep for you for I am not your broom
No John I will not sweep for you for I am not your broom
What nonsense are you speaking broom my words you must obey
Another life awaits be and I'm leaving you today
I am not your broom
I am not your broom
I've had enough I'm throwing off my chains of servitude
I am not your broom
I am not your broom
No longer must I sweep for you for I am not your broom

I always thought this song sounds like a conversation between an unhappy married couple, the "broom" being a pissed off wife, and what she would say to her husband, just before filing for divorce. Sounds like the wife thinks that the husband only sees her as a non-human cleaning object - taking her for granted.
Kind of sad little song, when taken from that viewpoint.
Uh... It's off of the "clildren's album".
Probably meant to be taken literally.
Ok Sir Larrikin I don't think you really understand this. This song is from the They Might Be Giants. I really doubt that this has any deeper meaning than some guy is talking to an actual broom who refuses work. They are a goofy happy fun band!! No need to find a deeper sad meaning to them. Just have fun and go with it, don't think just snjoy
never heard this song, but im sure its great, it has spectacular lyrics. I tried to download it. But I failed. I have no problem buying the album
The Don, have you ever actually listened to any TMBG carefully? Just about every one of their songs has a deeper (and usually dark) meaning. Sure you can find fun songs that don't actually have meaning (like Spider) but the vast majority are very clever and deep.
Whenever I hear this song, I think of the sequence in "Fantasia" where the brooms get out of control.
